Last Friday, MB NA and I met with the celluloid producers, examined the samples and touched on production. They were impressed with the appearance of the (not fully cured) samples, but I sensed the need for quality assurances, which have to come from the producers themselves. The other major issue is that MB made it clear that the marketing concept for an historical series must come first, before design, materials and engineering considerations. From our lobbying standpoint, the shift turns to concepts and ideas while the materials (i.e., celluloid curing) continue their slow but steady process. In other words, a rod of fully cured striated celluloid isn't alone going to make it happen. Fortunately, this may result in even more modern reissues of favorite vintage Montblanc pens over the years.

I have again suggested a 50% deposit for firm orders (assuming the price is about right), but without MB having a business plan in place for an historical series, it won't happen even with seed money for a guaranteed minimum order. Therefore, again, careful lobbying based on likely successful sales of reissued pens is the next step. Eric and I will discuss our next step, most likely consulting with knowledgeable vintage MB collectors worldwide to garner information on which models have always been in greatest demand and command strong prices, and are examples of "good design" (a subjective term, to be sure). And then we put together suggestions backed by information, with cured materials samples.

Note that planning and release of new products is considered highly confidential for competition and counterfeit reasons, and this is not just Montblanc. Other manufacturers of similar high-end products follow strict secrecy as well until a formal announcement and completed products are already in inventory. For that reason, details will likely become vague; call it "no news is good news."

Rome wasn't built in a day, but it was probably easier.

Yummy! For me the key phrase is "if the price is right". I think they'll sell a bomb of these if they do normal pricing. But if they get greedy, all bets are off.

My suggestion is something be placed on or in the pen such that it's clear they are reproductions and won't sully the collectors markets, yet also make it clear that they're special commemoratives/reproductions.

I want them for the luscious colors, NOT for collectability, as I'd adore using these every single day. [Note the plural now that I've seen the platinum as well as the green]. But I want users with OBB or BB nibs, not something to sit sealed in a box and trade off on fleabay in a few years.

Hopefully I'm not in the minority.

No you are not - I know there are folks out there who like to collect pens and keep them in mint condition. I can repsect that, it's just not me.

Thanks again for all those who are working on this project.

Not me!

I'm gonna save mine in a safety deposit box..... :eureka:

Then in ten years, gonna sell it for like $10,000, and throw in an ultra super rare, did it really ever exist, vintage bottle of MB Racing Green to match the celluloid, for the lucky su...I mean buyer.

Thanks,

Fred,

Hope springs eternal. I am in support of this effort and can only begin to understand the nature of the approach and great thought that must go into your discussions. I have sometimes wondered myself just how much Montblanc, as a corporation manufacturing a consumer good, really cares about a base of support that could create so much goodwill for so little relative effort. I am sure that we all wish you continued good luck and success and recognize that its a positive sign that this matter is being discussed. Thanks for keeping us posted.

Wow, Platinum striated--that is really exciting! Possibly one of the prettiest celluloids ever, IMO. Good work, folks!

If MB can see their way to it a Historical Series, I see a lot of pen sales for them. I think there is a big collector's base for this and then their is the big wedge of MB prestige buyers: why wouldn't they want a somewhat more interesting version of a MB, if the smooth salesperson at the local boutique tells them it's not just a MB, but a highly esteemed "update" of one of their classic pens?

here. here.

I am rather late in on this, but being on the verge of buying a yummy BB one on fleabay yesterday, was thinking this may be a better option.

Thanks to the crew behind this for putting in a sustained effort.

I'd love a proper celluloid MB in striated green.

Obviously, only if the pricing and aesthetics are right.

Will it use the current MB 146 nibs?

I'm already waiting on a current model from FPH... but who knows, wouldn't mind another so keep me updated! Any chance of sending all the FPN orders to one of the nibmeisters for tuning as part of the process? :P

In Rotation: MB 146 (EF), Noodler's Ahab bumblebee, Edison Pearl (F), Sailor ProGear (N-MF)

In storage: MB 149 (18k EF), TWSBI 540 (B), ST Dupont Olympio XL (EF), MB Dumas (B stub), Waterman Preface (ST), Edison Pearl (0.5mm CI), Noodler's Ahab clear, Pilot VP (M), Danitrio Densho (F), Aurora Optima (F), Lamy 2000 (F), Visconti Homo Sapiens (stub)
