I was just about to post about the SD body similarity to the Ahab based on stumbling on this pen at fountainpenrevolution. I see you folks are ahead of me.

I'm not certain whether or not the smell is the same as the Wality recycled plastic smell. Nathan seems to stick to his guns about it being vegetal resin, and I see no reason why it couldn't be a different plastic (or the same plastic for that matter) that Wality uses. In the case of the Chelpark Maverick which is the same body as the Noodler's flex pen (non-Ahab), it seems the Chelpark is made of regular plastic and not the type Nathan is using. I see no reason why it wouldn't be the same here.

ETA: As far as the clip and the whale, I don't think that's BS. I think the whale-like design of the clip likely drew Nathan to the design and to the use of the Ahab as the model line name. I don't think he ever said the clip or anything else about any of these pens is 100% custom.

One of the EBay re-sellers claims that the clip was designed to salute Massachusetts whale-men. Marketing people are "creative". I haven't read anything from Nathan Tardiff about his pen, but I assume he is smart enough not to have started the baloney.

This pen retails at 600INR which is also the MSRP. It translates to about 12USD at current rates.

Is there some place in India where I can buy it online?

See this post: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/237846-online-sources-for-the-camlin-sd-and-elegante/

The SD has suffered a price revision, I am afraid. the new MSRP is 1000/- compared to the older 600/-

Was interested to know - whether the "gold plated" nib is only golden colour or really "gold" plated?

(yes i know that whatever be the plating, it has nothing to do with nib performance)

thanks

It should indeed be gold plating. Even the lowly wality nibs get a gold "flash". as you might have guessed, the term gold plating can mean a variety of thickness of plating so not all gold plated nibs are plated equally. :) HTH.

Did it come with any warranty card as shown in the original post of Hari?

I also received it from stationarynew, but the sealed pack did not contain any warranty or terms/conditions.

Yes I did get the Warranty/Instruction card with the pack, even mine was sealed.

Also interesting is that in mine, it says "Kokuyo Camlin" instead of "Camlin" everywhere and "Sarad Dandekar - Joint Managing Director" (Reflecting Kokuyo's majority stake)

I am currently using my Camlin SD pen with an FPR Flex nib and Camel Royal Blue ink, which is my daily use ink - easily available and in 500 ml bottles too.

I thought the original nib was a bit on the Fine side for my liking. Also, I saw the posts about this pen looking so much like the Noodler's Ahab Flex that I just had to try a Flex nib. Writes very well and is one of my EDC pens.

The feed keeps up pretty well. I do get some rail-roading with extreme flex, but I think that is a property of the ink. Will try it with a wetter ink.

Overall, one of the better Indian pens.

Camlin SD - so poor quality. Just see my 5 day old SD

So, as you were plugging in a converter already full of ink into the section, a small amount of ink came out of the front of the pen? It is normal and would happen on any pen and like everything else, follows the laws of physics....

No. Its not the front, but from between the metal / rubber band near the nib. Even while writing the finger smears with the ink.

My camera does not permit that much close up, else I would have posted the closeups of the metal/rubber band that is filled with ink.

Have written to stationerynew - lets see what they reply. Else will have to take the matter with camlin.

Thanks for clarifying. A leak from where you say is indeed a defect and I hope the vendor or Camlin gives to you a new replacement pen.

Is that a Ratnamson Supreme with gold nib in your avatar? :)

Yes it is. :) Absolutely gorgeous pen, isn't it? I just love this pen.

It has somehow managed to become my favourite even though it has its own flaws and is not the smoothest or best writer among my pens. But I think the flaws give it a distinct personality...

I became a new member of The Fountain Pen Network just now. I am been reading your reviews on the 'SD' Camlin FP and Wallity. In your opinion which of the two is a better one and where in Mumbai could I purchase them both. Could you give me their tel. no. would appreciate it. I trust your judgment on the pens. Thanks

Anarosa

Hi Anarosa,

Wality can be bought from Kothari pen agency on Abdul Rehman street opp. Crawford market. I bought my SD in Pune, it should be available in large stationery stores in Mumbai. Check out your local shop first or ask them to get one for you. If they carry Camel inks they should be able to get this pen from the distributor.

Regarding which is better, the SD and Wality are at completely different price points and are totally different pens too. Try both, since the wality costs only a fraction of the SD!

Regards,

Hari

Hi Hari,

You surely put in good efforts for the review there, thanks!

I just ordered an SD on amazon.in

As I stay in Delhi, could you tell if Wality pens can be found here?

Thanks again!
