Four green inks

Here are swabs of the four green inks, with three well-known inks of other colours for reference.

Here is writing with the four greens, including the name of each ink written with a relatively new Shaeffer calligraphy pen (steel M nib).

The saturation or shading properties don't necessarily come through very well, due to the vagaries of dipping a fountain pen, but the colour values should be right. Please excuse the atrocious handwriting.

Gah! Diamine Woodland!

Yet another green I like and that looks just different enough to justify adding to my collection.

Thanks for the awesome comparisons!

Would I be right in thinking that the Omas Green looks like a slightly watered down version of the Diamine Woodland Green? That seems to be what I'm seeing in the scans. I'm interested, because Omas Green is supposedly the closest match to the old Sheaffer Emerald, but it's not readily available in the UK.

The Omas Green's hue appeals to me, and I HAVE and appreciate the Diamine Woodland. It's in my green Hero Demonstrator now.

Nice kana! ;)

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

I'd say that the Omas Green is actually much "brighter" in real life; it pops off the page much more than the scan indicates, at least for me in a Lamy Safari 1.1, and has excellent shading & outlining. Getting close to Springtime, too..... I'm gonna have to load up a pen with Omas Green!

Great review. The way you wrote each sample--somewhat condensed, in different styles, and with extensive writing--really helps to distinguish the different inks.

While the scans may be a little washed-out, the Omas green ink (at least, the sample I have of it) just isn't terribly vivid. The shade is nice, but it's a little pale.

My thought was, since writing is what you do with inks, the best way to see what they are like is to do a bit of writing with them, & the best way to do a comparison is to juxtapose the writing samples. The original test was mostly for my own interest, helping me decide which one to buy, but I realized it would also be a good thing to put up here on FPN. The reference swabs are meant to help with the well-known problem of inaccurage colour reproduction, since they're common enough that a lot of people will know what they look like.

Thanks for this good review. I especially appreciated the extensive writing with each sample to give us a good idea of the variations within one color and the variations among the four greens. Also, the use of the other three colors as reference points was helpful. I have and love Diamine Woodland but am open to the other greens. Never too many green inks!

Thank you very much for the scan and the review. This thread is a big help!

May you have pens you enjoy, with plenty of paper and ink. :)

Please use only my FPN name "Gran" in your posts. Thanks very much!
