The swap would explain the later barrel as evidinced by the striped ink window. The 2 tone nibs like you have started getting installed in the late 1980s to early 1990s (they were phased in as I recall), but the monotone nibs were gone by 1992. Serial numbers started in the early 1990s, and a clip would not be replaced with a barrel service, so my guess based on what you have said is the pen is from the early 1990s. In the end it is all academic as the pen is an heirloom to you and more meaningful that just some random off eBay. I hope you continue to enjoy it and it bring you wonderful memories for many years to come.

By the way, here is a shot I swiped showing the two-tone and the monotone nib side-by-side:

You're right! I do find the correct dating important, my dad has had quite a few pens, these have stayed (read: not been lost), so I don't blame him for dating it incorrectly. To him, it was mostly a pen (albeit a good one).

But I do truly appreciate you helping me know more about it! The information is always appreciated and as an engineer and lawyer I think it's always important to be precise. The picture is indeed helpful.

Again, thank you for helping me learn more about what is an important heirloom! Knowing more about it makes it all the more special.

This is the pen in the current line up that tempts me most. I handled it at Heathrow airport recently. It has a great weight to it, in every sense.

I resisted, despite the great tax free price on the depressed pound. If it had a B nib I may have stumbled, but all the pens have M nibs there.

Am I seeing a slight silver patina in that picture? Easily fixed, but I think I like it.

Yes noticed the silver patina as soon as I took the picture as mentioned above and wondered if I liked it or not. Then it had to go as you see below

Mind you all pens you will always find either F or M. Flagship boutiques I have been told to very seldom get a B on occasion, if they knew in advance there's such a demand in their niche. But you can exchange it at will anywhere you want.

Hi,

Lovely pen. Can I ask which wallet do you have in the background?

Regards,

Pranay.

~ The only B nib I ever saw or heard of in the flagship boutique in Beijing is the very first broad nib I ever acquired.

It was a 90th Anniversary 146 B. It wrote so well that I went broad and broader.

Thus a B nib is uncommon but oh-so-persuasive.

Thank you.

I understand the Heathrow terminal 3 shop is connected to Harrods, and they have a policy of medium only nibs. I understand the exchange policy. Maybe I will one day, as the fine Heritage 1912 I have I needed to love so much, I ground the nib myself.

There is a Hitchcock here in Shenzhen, and while I suspect the patina is less suitable, it is also attactive.

I think I like a heavy pen. Something with heft. The Heritage 1912 has a surprising and reassuring dense mass.

Hey, thank you for the pic! I liked it so much that I drove 45 mind to my local boutique to see the pen live. It's gorgeous.

Speaking of which, I test wrote with a broad nib... It was smooth and juicy. A bit stubby... Overall great!! Not much thicker lines than my medium though...

But then again the B are stubbier and juicier!! Apparently it comes with a cookie... Lol
