QM2: Nice Grayscale Safari Collection

Great display! The green one wins first prize of course!

Mine are a bit less cheerful. Here are almost all of them:

An eye for insignificant details is a good sign you will do just fine in medical school...

As a sharp wit and powerful sarcasm is a sign that you already have.

Thanks! It makes somewhat romantic-looking the very unromantic task of grading huge stacks of term papers :)

Okay are the "Pearlescent" pens a special edition of the Safari? Or are they Al-stars?

Sorry but I'm tightening the section to normal tolerances - I refuse to overtighten as this will likely damage the section.

You should take into account that the Safari is primarily a school pen which is intended to be used by children and young pupils, so it has to be quite sturdy. Many children probably tend to overtighten the barrel, and older Safari models which have seen a lot of use are often so worn-out that the barrel turns too far, so you will see parts of the section inside the ink window. If you have this problem with a new pen, the parts of the section should be on the other side of the window (meaning that the barrel turns not far enough yet, instead of turning too far). In this case there is nothing wrong with applying a little more pressure to get the barrel in the right position, in my opinion (because the pen is designed to be treated quite roughly in this regard).

You could also try to turn around the little ring between barrel and section, maybe that helps.

Best regards

Hans-Peter

Please excuse the poor picture, but here is my mostly complete collection. I'd say this is complete, less the truly exotic ones.

Not sure where my black textured pen got to. It isn't in the picture.

I believe I lack:

- Safari demo

- Itoya AL star

- "Bastian Schweinsteiger" Al star

- At least one or two "finish" variations (gloss vs matte)

Best Regards, greg

great!

All my pens are users.** I have them all to date...incl. all the Joy variants (5), the original demonstrator,all the variants of the older dark yellow, 2 pinks( LE and Reg. issue with an X cap button), both bright yellows one with black clip and nib, the 2 Flames, Vista with foil treatment, metal top button's on the Alpin White[ black clip and nib] Savanna, & Terra pens... with brass liner retainers, & ones with different feeds in the early issues, the Terra and Savanna coffin cases, and, lbnl , the white crappy cap liners from really early pens (removed for safe keeping). There are slight variations in the plastic colors especially on the "Kermit" green- Limes. I can ID three. I don't consider the Swedish Dept. Store thing , nor the BS Al-Star as releases to capture due to their promotional nature. These are not regular issues....like the Japanese pen I talk about later, here. You funny people out there ...get out your yellow spray cans....lol. There is also an issue from Japan ...a white with red clip somebody there made up to torture collectors. They jacked up the $$ to over 100 GWs. You can make an LE. Don't know if they'll do it any more. All u need do is cover the production charges for the minimum no. they will make for u. The caveat( emptor) is that the color will not be anything they haven't already done. That "Itoya" thing is nothing but an issue photo'ed at an angle to effect a color shift ...or it's just another another manipulation to jack up a price for the uninformed collector.** My gf mixes and matches the barrels, sections, and caps to match her daily outfits for work. She's such a clothes horse & models a bit. FYE, the Al-Star parts don't fit the Safari's...without modification(s).

I had to take a shot of my Al-Stars now that the new purple showed up. The new one is my favorite and my daughter's too... she ran off with it not long after it came in the door.

I'm curious about the 2nd Al-Star from the bottom. Is it a Raspberry ? It looks too orange compared to my one or is that an effect of the flash lighting ?

Nice pic!

Is the blue of the Aquamarine different from the blue of the 2006 LE?

Cheers,

Hi Diplo,

It is completely different and a really nice color. It is probably my favorite of LEs from the last few years.

Cheers,

Woody

While we are eagerly waiting for the new 2009 colour, I took my Safaris together and made some family shot:

<img src="http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/6723/dsc9450dv7.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

<img src="http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/7474/dsc9454ty6.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

And this is the queen of the lot: a NOS stickered Savanna in the original box:

<img src="http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/6831/dsc9456za7.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Out of them, only the Savanna is a 1st generation Safari (thanks to woody for his great work on how to tell a Safari from another!), the Alpin and the Yellow are Third, all others Fourth.

Ciao,
