Gold Ink

Has anyone come across a 'gold' ink? I've used rollerball pens in the past for gold lettering, but wondered if there was an actual gold or silver ink that I could use with one of my fountain pens?

Thanks!

As far as I know there is only gold or silver metallic ink for dip pens. The metallic particles would clog any fountain pen.

That said, dip pens are great fun!!! I've been playing with a wide variety of metallic and iridescent pigment powders mixed with gum Arabic and water. They are simply gorgeous to write with.

So what gold or silver ink would you recommend for a dip pen?

I prefer powders that you mix yourself over Herbin or liquid acrylic metalics. There's a brand called Maimeri that is beautiful and doesn't seem to need gum Ararbic mixed in if you can find it. Otherwise you can (at least here in the U.S.) buy a wide variety of fine metallic/mica powders cheaply at a craft store. Then you buy some powdered gum Arabic http://cgi.ebay.com/Gum-Arabic-Powder-1-OZ...Q2em118Q2el1247 mix both (approx 4:1) with water or ink until it's a good writing consistencey. When it dries out you just add more water. You have to keep mixing it because the powder settles to the bottom.

This is a brand of the pigment powders I like: http://www.luminarteinc.com/

There is one golden ink which can be used in fountain pens made from real 24K nano particles which will not clog a regular fountain pen.

The ink writes rather pale but actually dries to visable "pure gold" on the paper (e.g. very nice on black paper).

German/Italian pen expert Tom Westerich introduced this ink to me a few years ago. It was amazing to see how a fountain pen writes metallic golden letters!

Using real gold for this ink a bottle was around US $ 500.

I have no idea if this ink is still around but you might want to contact Tom about it if you are interested (http://www.abruzzo.de/)

Thanks for the information, however that is way out of my price range for ink. I think I'll stick to some craft type ink and a dip pen. Thanks anyway! I guess if I had thought about it more I would have realised that a metallic finish would need some particles which if course would clog up the nib and feed.

JBB, that's very nice. A beautiful combination!

May you have pens you enjoy, with plenty of paper and ink. :)

Please use only my FPN name "Gran" in your posts. Thanks very much!

Iroshizuku has a nice Fuyu-Syogun that comes out a nice silvery color on paper for me.

Just an update - I found by chance a craft shop today - unfortunately they had run out of dip pens, but will have some on Monday so I'll go get one and some nibs then.

I did buy a bottle of gold ink which is very pretty. It is made by Winsor & Newton and they had other pretty colours as well. It's called Gold-Metallic Bronze and looks very gold on paper.

Can't wait to get a dip pen now to try it properly!!!!
