Linen paper?

I was just curious -- there's lots of cotton rag paper around, but is there any linen writing paper available? If so, what's it like? I think I had some linen drawing paper a long time ago, but can't remember what kind of qualities it had.

Linen is made from flax. A google search didn't bring up any for sale, but, a bit of history: http://www.wovepaper.co.uk/flax.html

 

I know from trying to learn to use a drop spindle, that flax fibers are very long and sharp. Cotton fibers are very short. It'd be nice to see what it's like to use linen paper.

Actually, there's lots of linen paper out there. Nekoosa linen (105 gsm) is very nice with fountain pens. Mohawk makes a fp friendly VIA linen. I was just at Office Depot today and they have linen paper, albeit a bit pricey. I've noticed some of the linen papers have about 25% cotton. Ebay has linen paper available in reams as well. I didn't find linen at Wal-Mart but did find some nice 100% cotton at a decent price with matching envelopes. As a yarn spinner, I'm fond of paper which has real fiber and like the texture while writing.

Nekoosa linen looks to be a linen finish, not a linen fiber, though. Looking at Domtar's site, it's not obvious to me that it actually is linen.

If it's even around anymore -- Google isn't much help when looking for "linen paper", obviously. Really, I was just curious about it -- linen used to be one of the two standard "rags" used for paper, but it may have been wiped off the map by King Cotton.

 

I seem to remember paper with a relatively "hard" surface and good line definition, and that's about it.

I just want to try some real linen paper made from flax. It might not be much different than rag/cotton paper but I want to find out. I haven't found any real linen writing papers on eBay or other sources.

You might contact these people -- at least some of their paper seems to incorporate linen. The funny thing is, they're right in my area, but I haven't checked them out yet ("life keeps getting in the way", as it were). I think the online store has been added since the last time I looked at their site.

I make my own notebooks. One of the beautiful things of working in the print industry. I use Wausau Paper, royal linen 80lb cover. Works like a champ. Wetter inks stay in control, you won't father on the embossing. Go into any print shop and buy a ream. Do it now....

The thing is, we're talking about linen (flax) -fiber paper, not linen finish paper. Very hard to Google!

I did look at the sites suggested above and The Papermill storehad a selection of "Linen" papers from several manufacturers, but....they were "Linen" finsh and obviously not made with linen fibers. If they were, the price would be much, much higher. I still haven't had any luck, but will keep trying. In the meantime I'll get some really nice 100% cotton rag bond to write on and try out the Wausau royal linen Perhaps all the linen paper is used to print our money...

I do have a small Moleskine notebook and both the Mont Blanc and the old Esterbrook work well with it.

Thanks for being the board (bleep) Tweel. Just trying to give a suggestion on the stuff I'm around and use daily at my professional work and personal work. Well if you want the 'fake'stuff, I highly suggest the brand I use. It may not be 100% what you're looking for. But it's great stock.
