Max von Oppenheim Patron of the Arts

Is anyone intrigued? I like sterling silver and the 18kt rings make a nice contrast, but the geometric design of the triangles start to hurt my eyes. The sterling silver continues its entire length right down through the metal section, so it's gotta be a real heavyweight based on the 146 platform.

It may be too soon to tell, but the way I see it, it's a collectible and not very useful, at least in my hand. So, I'll pass.

Like you will buy this pen. Let's stick with our 146s or 149s and nice oblique nibs, or in your case, 145s.

MvO was quite a man of his time, I suppose, but he is also considered to be a pillager of Halafian and very important neo-Hittite sculptures and reliefs. Most of which were destroyed during the bombing of Berlin because he would not donate or sell these valuable historic artifacts to the State Museum in Berlin.

Fred,

Is this announcement available online? I googled to no avail. I saw the picture in the boutique the other day, but I like to keep images on my laptop.

That was quite rude. So I'd like to have a look and dream. I watch Montblanc's design progression with great interest, and I don't see why it should bother you. Please leave me alone so I can enjoy the forums.

I suppose, but was really meant in jest. I think the POAs are going over the top on design.

Still wondering about the choice of Max v.O. though.

Darius,

That was where I saw it. Note that their release date was March 2008! I suspect a typo rather than a delay.

Frankly, I agree with niksh on design preference. "Over the top" is being nice; "gross me out" is more accurate.

Thanks Fred. I'll email the boutique and see if they would be willing to email some pictures. If they wouldn't, well, they'll be out sooner or later.

Fred--Thought you were off today for a trip?

I am, but I am running late.

The boutique offered to email the release and photo to me, but I was honest and told them if they did, I've have it on the internet in minutes, and I'd rather not have them in hot water. They take care of me, and I take care of them. Ya know how that works? But they did share a lot of detail.

Well, I have to drive to BWI. Bye for awhile!

  • 3 weeks later...

I just received a photo email from MB. I'll try to post it here later. I have a favorable impression from a rather small and low resolution photo. Here's the description-

Paying tribute to the German historian and archaeologist (1860 -1949)

Son of the famous banker‚ Sal Oppenheim and founder of the “Max Freiherr von Oppenheim Stiftung” (1929) which today supports continuing archaeological research work and conservation of the oriental cultural and its legacy.

Design Features:

The Ring Ornaments are inspired from Tell-Halaf (main entrance) in north Syria – Oppenheim’s most important exploration –

featuring the rings of the Edition.

The oriental design of this Limited Edition Writing Instrument is inspired by the typical mosque architecture from the Syrian area.

The translucent precious lacquer on cap and body - creates a 3-D effect on the fountain pen’s surface – and is based on different mosaic techniques.

The nib is a reminder to the life of Oppenheim as a Bedouin during his explorations.

Product Features:

925 Sterling Silver Fountain Pen, based on size FP146

Gold plated rings

Grey, translucent, lacquer on cap and barrel

Specially designed 18 karat gold nib, rhodium plated

Montblanc logo in white resin

The POA for Max Von Oppenheim is in the boutiques now. We just got ours in store on the 30th of January. It isn't as heavy as you may think, but I agree the diamond mosaic pattern can be a bit hard on the eyes  .

Overall as far as POA's go, I really think it is one of the better designs MB has done in recent years.

Price...$2635.00USD, might eat deep into some folks budgets for pens

I love the fact that it is sterling, I think the diamond mosaic pattern looks quite handsome, and it's great to have a design that is based on Arabic culture.

Best,

I think even based on this low resolution photo it's going to be a

highly desirable pen.

Very clean lines. That sterling, black mosaic, and decorated gold banding combination is regally impressive without going over the top.

My Cross 150th anniversary is of course quite different, but it is sterling with black bands, and I've always loved that combination.

I think MB has done very well with it.

Best,

Jeen

I'll have to see it in person I guess. My first impression is its a product more than a pen. Is it me or did MB move away from ink windows? Why are these pens missing this important feature? Another item I wish more of their pens had is the heart hole...but that's just me.

When is it supposed to hit the shelves?

cheers
