Lamy Safari

The blue is from 1997.

Thanks... So not in the shops any more, alas.

I'll just have to look around... (not actively seeking...)

I have what seems to be a 4th generation textured Charcoal Safari with a 3rd generation cap. The pen has a chrome nib with the laser markings, while the cap has what looks like a round metal screw at the top inside, but without a slot or cross. There are possibly two parallel flats on the screw, but it's very difficult to both illuminate and see down into the black cap.

The pen was purchased new from Goulet Pens in March of 2012.

Actually I believe the charcoal safari was never shipped with a crome nib,but maybe you ordered a specific nib size so they changed the original black nib to a different size chrome nib. I think it's rather unlikely that you received a 3rd generation cap. As far as I know, they were discontinued before the 21st century. However, would be interesting, if you could post some pictures of your pens! :)

I did order a non-standard nib, a 1.9mm stub.

The pen, closed:

The nib, it's a bit dirty with nib creep:

And I found a way to look into the cap. The flashlight is positioned as closely as I could estimate to the inside depth of the cap so that I could focus on the flashlight and get the cap screw in focus. Then I enlarged that section of the photo as a detail in the upper right corner of the composite you see here.

Here are all my Lamy pens in one shot.

http://bulk-share.slickpic.com/album/share/YOMT5O3T3TOTgw/11125058.0/800/p/Lamy_Sub-collection.jpg

From left to right they are:

27e, 14K OM nib

Linea, 1,1mm italic nib, chrome

Studio, Fine 14K nib (but I think it would interchange with Safari nibs)

2000, EF nib

Safari Charcoal, 1.9mm italic nib, chrome

Al-Star, 1,1mm italic nib, chrome

Safari, Red, oblique italic nib ground down from a Broad nib, black

Vista, oblique italic nib ground down from a Broad nib, chrome

Safari, Royal Blue, no nib and destroyed feed. It's original nib was black.

Safari Combo, pencil and ballpoint, Royal Blue

Don't know the model name of this one, but it's a combination pencil, black ballpoint and red ballpoint.

I found out what the last one is called. It's just named Tri-Pen.

For those in the USA like yourself, see http://lamyusa.com. Sending the pen in will require that it be accompanied by a check for $9.50 and they will repair the pen. Once upon a time you could buy replacement parts on that site, but that option doesn't seem to be there anymore. Not much loss though, a replacement nib section used to cost almost as much as a new pen and it was way cheaper to use the $9.50 repair option.

That's a wonderful collection! I'm still searching to get my hands on a terra/savanna one, also this originally packed aquamarine one looks very nice..

C.P.

Thank you. A sensibly priced Terracotta and "the Flame" are what I am after.

I forgot to mention that I also have the white body/red clip Japan only version with its case, in the original box. That one doesnt go on display though! :)

I keep it in the original packaging locked away in a different display cabinet out of direct sunlight.

I appreciate that some may say it should be used, but I am hoping that may be one of the very few pens upon which I might make a profit to help the pension fund when the time comes.

While talking about the Safari, I just got this nice sticker in my mailbox:

The sticker was part of a advertising campaign. The owner of the sticker got a Lamy T-shirt for free, when the number of the back of his sticker was shown at the shop window of a pen shop...

...probably back in the 80's.

Hello Christof,

It's taken me a while to find your Lamy Safari sticker post just to check whether yours is the same as mine (apologies for the protective sleeve - hopefully the photo is reasonably clear enough). I've not seen any others but perhaps you have? I'll repost this also in the Safari thread started by Haywoody. Mine also has a number but it's on the front. Nothing on the back of mine.

Happy collecting!

Best wishes,

Chris

(Just reposting here to keep the two major Safari threads in the loop - that started by MactheMaths and this one by Haywoody)

Wow, what a great work. I am speechless.

I thought just to learn a little about the Lamy Safari, but was exceedingly surprised of the huge information you shared.

Thanks a lot.

I've seen some of those stickers, also ones which weren't shown here already on sale on eBay Germany some time ago... It was a buy now offer for 4,99 per sticker. I think they weren't sold, so if they come up again on eBay, maybe someone of you is interested in them..

Christof, not doubting you. 2012 Green.

Just wondering why UK called it Apple, USA called it Lime?

Were there location-specific names?

another question, was there ever a glossy black with black clip, and nib?

Hi bphollin - this quote is from ages ago, I know, but this glossy black with black clip and nib seems to have surfaced on a popular auction site. I questioned the seller as I don't think this combination was ever issued by Lamy but the seller claims otherwise. Did you ask this because you'd seen one yourself? I suspect the one on sale is a Frankenpen but I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this.

You did not ask me, but I think that all the glossy pens in early colors (except alpin) are just heavy worn.

I observe this on my own pen, a Charcoal Safari which I carried with me the last 15 years. The surface texture has completely disappeared and the entire pen is glossy now.

Just my thoughts.

Christof, I purchased my glossy red with black nib when new and still a current model in the market. White plastic slotted box. It was glossy red with no texture.

It was your Alpin and my Griso that caused me to wonder about the possibility of black with black. Is it possible in a foreign market?

Okay, maybe my statement was not clear. With the term "early colors" I was thinking of Savanna, Terra and Umbra.

Here is a short timeline of the first regular Safari colors:

I got these facts from Mrs. Kiessling, the very friendly Lady from Lamy customer service. She took the informations from old catalogs.

As you can see, there was never made a glossy Umbra pen.

Hope this helps.

Language difference like Terra-rot :) (thanks for earlier lesson).

Umbra here - USA would be in the brown range. Would that be charcoal elsewhere? Charcoal is the very dark gray textured model USA.

So I see from the chart my red glossy 1989 is heading towards 30 years of reliable heavy duty service. All original parts, never an adjustment, ink and go.

Is it any wonder that I recommend Safari?
