I was reading, I did not know there were different generations.

well guess what, I have a charcoal gray smooth texture.

in Third generation. says Germany on the bottom. early 90's I would guess because it's from school.

Hi Black Spot,

Please post a good quality photo of your smooth texture charcoal grey - that's regarded as legendarily rare.

A larger picture of my new Lamy presentation tray can be seen here:

ps: I don't believe that there's a smooth charcoal/umbra existing. but they get smoother when worn. can easily be seen when I put my every day pen next to the mint one of my collection. the worn one is almost glossy.

amendment to the above chart: with your tray, we can see Three white Safari's = Alpin white shiny/white matte, both black clip/nib. And, a current white chrome clip/steel nib. (thanks Christof!)

also, edited to inquire: Gino generously developed, (as a class project) the Safari chart to aid Us collectors. However it concludes, though Safari new colors march on. Could another tech savy collector develop a Part II Chart, to continue with new colors, LE/SE, and also include tag, color, nib, clip sticker codes, and box/packaging types? We have the official forum now, this would make for quick new person inquiries, and yearly updates.

Hi pen2paper

I tried to send you an PM but this failed.

Please send me a PM with your emai address.

BTW: Ginos chart is wrong in one point: the nib of the Terra red Safari is steel colored, not black.

Yikes! I just saw this christof! 12 days later.. I reset the forum pages somehow and overwhelmed with 848 Pages to scroll through... haven't crossed this Lamy subject until just now.

Late to this party but I just wanted to add that those franken pens that were supposedly given to Lamy reps, are nothing extraordinary.

Apparently you can order Frankenpens straight from Lamy. There's a post somewhere on this forum that shows a special run (80 or so) of Lamy Safaris that were given serial numbers (limited edition), the section of the Al-Star, a white barrel and a blue cap. All wearing a Polish pen club name.

So maybe those "rep" pens, are just part of a limited run made for a particular client. All the photos I've seen of them show nothing special to them, except for the fact that all use Al-Star sections and limited edition colours.

Wow great selection of Lamys!

Thank you!

I have two more inbound. A neon lime and an orange.

I'd love to find a reasonably priced flame orange.

Me too! :)

Whilst still not quite in the same range as prices asked by some sellers for the Terracotta, the Flame is stii a lot of cash!

Nice set. I love the dark blue one 7th from left.

When was this produced and what is the official colour name?

Thank you RMN,

The dark blue is called "Sky" from my understanding.

The one I have is pre-2010 as that is when they changed it to a chrome clip.

Hi D.ck I do see in old posts the dark true blue listed as sky blue.

It's still available in chrome clip, silver nib. In fact the 1.1 I have installed makes it one of my everyday reliables.

My ability to offer quality photo uploads is nil, currently no CCD scanner, so what I have in the series, though missing a few, (terra/vanna, alpin texture, out of country LE's, advertisement LE's), can't easily be shared. I do have original boxes with numbers.

Considering the fakes on the market, I'd like to see a serious comprehensive Safari update: (ABS separate from Al-Star).

  • complete color list, (in a color chart, as was started earlier)
  • dates,
  • numbers,
  • clip/nib color,
  • cap differences,
  • International Only LE's (Sweden/Japan/Korea)
  • Limited Advertising LE's (Apple/MS)
  • Calligraphy Sets
  • Lamy Manufacture available replacement nibs,
  • types of packaging/cases,
  • revisit of the Autopsy photos to show the subtle changes over the years,
  • advertisements,
  • Fake next to authentic comparisons.

I did have all of my Safari's on the collector download available here, prepping to try to engage someone with tech skills in this project, but all lost during a faulty surge protector pc fail.

We should have a complete reference, that can be easily added to.

Anyone with tech skills able to develop a quick glance pictorial reference, with: photos, by colors, textures, clips, nibs, caps, dates, numbers?

Packaging, which varied, could be separate.

I have what seems to be a 4th generation textured Charcoal Safari with a 3rd generation cap. The pen has a chrome nib with the laser markings, while the cap has what looks like a round metal screw at the top inside, but without a slot or cross. There are possibly two parallel flats on the screw, but it's very difficult to both illuminate and see down into the black cap.

The pen was purchased new from Goulet Pens in March of 2012.
