Ink is now watery

I flushed out my Waterman Phileas the other day, and now I put a new cartridge on it. The ink is extremely watery now though. What does one do?

Try taking the cart out, blotting with a paper towel (if you want you can blow into the back of the nib section to gently expel the water/ink into the towel), add the cart back, blot again to get ink flow.

If that doesn't help, at least you've got ink all over your lips and face!

After flushing the nib, put it into some toilet paper and shake out the water like you were shaking an old-style mercury thermometer. The goal is to use the inertial forces to help get most of the water out. You can also blow on the cartridge end of the section to evacuate the water. A light shot of low pressure compressed air wouldn't hurt either.

When you flush a pen, it needs to dry for a day or two before putting ink back into it. Otherwise the residual water will dilute the new ink. This is why I think people should own at least two pens. You need a second pen to use while the first one is drying after having been flushed.

That's true. Shaking gets quite a bit of the water out, but not all.

Excellent idea! :D

Three pens, in case you find the one you just put in service needs work.

I respectfully take issue with the folks that say you need to let your pen dry. I shake mine dry as described, then get the ink going. I will agree that there is water left in the feed that will dilute the ink, but it's a very small quantity compared to the amount of ink the feed will hold. I doubt anyone could see any dilution effect of the remaining water.

Of course, remember to hold on to your pen when you shake, otherwise it will sail through the ethers and embed itself in your ceiling. :headsmack:
