Dollar demonstrators!

Is Hisnibs.com the only place to buy it online?

Try the user noted above who was selling some in the board classifieds section for $11 shipped to the US and $13 shipped to elsewhere. I have bought two from him (one demo and one grey), and I love both. He might be out, but I think he still had some from his shipment the last time I checked.

Jimmy James is correct. There are some for sale in the classified section on this site, although I have no idea how many were for sale or how many are left.

You can also buy from hisnibs.com as well as swisherpens.com

I have 2 Dollars myself. Smooth writers.

From what I see, I should be able to completely disassemble the pen by screwing out the piston and pulling out the nib. But I have had no luck in screwing out the piston yet. Am I doing anything wrong?

Looking at the converter section threads under magnification, I can see that it is attached with clear epoxy on the threads. I would not try to remove the converter, or the barrel might shatter.

Old thread but this might help, haven't tried it myself yet...

Click here and then scroll down post #1 to picture number 3, then some instructions can be found on page 3, post #32, courtesy of FPN member adt475.

Like I said, haven't tried it myself and cannot take responibility if any damage occures, but certainly looks do-able to take the Dollar Demos apart without breaking if careful.

EDIT: Forgot Hyperlink, should be there now.

Whatever you did with the razor blade might come in handy for me someday. Could you explain exactly how you made the nib perform better?

Swisher sells them too, cheaper (10$ last time I checked).

Still $10 today: I just ordered one, plus a Rotring Core Lysium (fine nib) from the clearance page, also for $10. I'm gonna be going to the PO every day this week ... :-)

A bit late with this reply; I got distracted by shiny things. I do like the Dollar "demonstrator" a great deal, after the Noodler's Black I ordered finally arrived so I could fill it. I've been using it more than any of my other pens the last week or so, and have carried it as a shirt-pocket pen whenever I've gone out with the expectation of needing a pen (I get some funny looks at the supermarket).

Beautifully smooth writer, very light, balances best for my large hand with the cap posted. Because of that big hand, I have to hold the pen behind the section in order for the nib to reach the paper at a proper FP angle, so I'm holding it right at the reservoir. Last night it blorped for the first time at about 60% full, just after I lifted the nib from the paper and was about to cap it, so I got a good spatter of ink all over my hands and desk, but nowhere it could stain, luckily!

After leaving it tip up in my cup overnight, I carefully screwed the piston in until most of the air was gone, and it's behaving well again. :-)

A very good pen and an absolute steal if you can get one for 18 rupees (38 cents at todays exchange rate). For 28 cents I'll take 100 of them!

So far I have been pleased with my Dollar 717i...

However, I have been having condensation in the cap. It will be fine, but when I go outside (about 60 degree F temp difference) and come back in there is condensation in the cap. I haven't noticed this on any other pen.

Would you?

Condensation on a regular, opaque inner cap is not uncommon. That's often the reason you'll find a bit of ink on the nib or section when uncapping, and if copious enough, can lead one to erroneously think there's a leak in the pen.

I suppose I should be more specific. I am talking the entire cap is covered in a fog like mist of condensation. And yes, I can understand that you wouldn't see this on an opaque cap; however, I haven't noticed this fogging on other pens with clear caps. Could the ink make a difference?

Thanks for the information, you saved me from searching for that problem with bits of ink on the nib when uncapping. I figured I was just getting it due to cheaper pens.

Condensation would be more likely with a thinner-walled cap such as on the Dollar pen -- with less insulation -- as heat transfer would be easier. I'm looking at a Monteverde Artista demonstrator now, and the cap walls are much thicker.

As to the ink on the nib, etc., that can of course also be caused just by jostling of the pen while carrying -- and is more common with snap on caps than screw on ones -- all else being equal -- as re-seating the cap until it snaps into place can cause some ink to express itself as well.

QUOTE (ntheo @ Dec 31 2008, 10:42 PM) Hey..

How do you pull out the nib on the Dollar Demo?

Is it just friction fitted?

Do you have any specific way of doing it effectively?

Thanks.

Well, I didn't pull it out. I just used the razor blade with the pen fully assembled.

i put a wooden clothespin over the nib and feed, you know, grabbed it with the pin, and then took some slip jaw pliers and just pulled. came out very easily. and the feed is tough so it will be fine. but don't wiggle, just pull.

Dollar demonstrator - one of the worst pens that I have ever owned. Perhaps I got a dud but there was so much about it that was disappointing, cheap and just plain awful. Many of the sub £1 pens from the local supermarkets are much better.

I don't have a Dollar Demonstrator, but I do have two Noodler's Flexible Nib Creapers which have the same body. They are definitely hit and miss. I have one that I love and that I...well don't have much love for. It might be worth trying out another one. Sometimes they even turn up in the marketplace.

I have 2 Dollar Demo but both have benn leaking around the feeder all the time, which is quite annoying. Two friends of mine have been experienced the same problem. Is there any solution for that, except stop using them?

Does this only happen when the ink level is less than 1/2? If so, it could be due to air expansion.
