J. Herbin Cafe des Iles

Another freebie from the folks at Exaclair. I love this color and most of the qualities of this ink. It's extremely well-behaved, even on the cheapest papers, there's no nib creep, and the shading is extraordinary. I only wish that it were cheaper and had some water resistance.

This ink is gorgeous, and for the price it had better be!

It's also my first ink with significant shading, and I'm sold. Now to find some broad nibs for my Esties....

I use this J. Herbin Cafe des Iles as my regular brown. It might tend too much towards red for some folks but I love the warmth and it behaves perfectly in every pen I've tried it in.

See, I don't think they are that expensive.... $8.75? Especially since I've yet to finish any bottle of ink, I usually end up trading them away. The cost & little bottle, makes them feel more "special" to me.

Nice review. This ink is also lovely in a pen with a wet broad nib, a real pleasure, I love it.

This is the only "fancy color ink" I've used lately, and I think it will replace waterman havanna as my favorite brown ink. It has some reddish hue which I like a lot, and with nice shadowing. It also seems to flow better than waterman havanna.

Thanks for the broad nibbed sample! (I've got some big ones on the way that will help with future ink reviews.)

  • 1 month later...

Received a bottle of this today. I find it a beautiful color, warm, not too dark, nicely there. It's friendly, flows nicely. I can see why it'd become a favorite brown.

May you have pens you enjoy, with plenty of paper and ink. :)

Please use only my FPN name "Gran" in your posts. Thanks very much!

Update: I now have this ink in my OBB Pelikan 400. I'm in lurve. A handwritten review of the pen (using this ink) will be up shortly (before Monday, say).

I guess I think it's less expensive than Noodlers, Diamine, Caran D"Ache, and Sailor inks, according to my browsing :meow: .

J. Herbin inks come in 30ml bottles. A regular Noodler's bottle, as an example, is 3 oz., or almost three times as much ink. J. Herbin inks are inexpensive "by the bottle", but about twice as expensive by the milliliter. They're nice inks, and I think well worth the money, but they're not cheap.

My former local J. Herbin supplier doesn't carry FP inks anymore. Grrrr.
