My ink selector

southpaw

Recommended Posts

Here is a simple chart that I made to help me keep track of what inks I have and to help me choose which one I want next.

On my monitor the colors are pretty close to accurate.

Note on the Noodlers Black the gray lines outlined by the black - the bottle had sat undisturbed for quite some time and apparently settled or separated out. The black line came after shaking the bottle.

Methodology: the swab was done with, surprise, a cotton swab/q-tip and the scribble was done using a glass dip pen.

Ooh, the Éclat de Saphire looks really nice.

Can you say a little more about the glass pen you used? I've never tried a dip pen, and it would seem perfect for putting out ink samples.

Southpaw, what a great idea. I haven't got quite enough inks of the same basic colour to make this sytem worthwhile - yet!

But I know it's only a matter of time ... ;)

Thanks for posting all your ink colors! This chart is really helpful to me....Unfortunately I feel my ink addiction starting to cause intense cravings for new inks....like Diamine Imperial purple....

The glass dip pen is one I bought off of an Ebay seller in Germany. It is a historical art glass dip pen hand-made in Lauscha, Germany. Here are some pics:

Yes, IME it is a bit darker coming out of a wet, fine nib, but keep in mind the samples were done with a cotton swab and a dip pen that is at least a medium in width which brings out the nuances in the color more and makes it appear lighter to some extent.

Do you just use this for testing or do you really write with this glass dip pen? It doesn't look too comfortable to write with.

Very nice indeed, Southpaw! Thanks for sharing!

Do you have more pages of your ink slector, or are you currently at 30 inks? (not that it isn't enough, though :D)

I do like your glass pen, too. I happen to have one, but it doesn't work too well. I need to get another one :D.

Warm regards, Wim

No, this is the only sheet as I am currently at 30 inks (and need to hold at that for a while).

This glass dip pen is used primarily for testing. I personally prefer a fountain pen to a dip pen and just got it to test inks and to play around with. Despite how it looks, the pen is quite comfortable in the hand. My fingers and thumb rest on the amber knurl right above the nib, so it works very well.

Thanks for confirming this interesting behavior. I have seen it too.

Very strange behavior for an FP ink...

Very nice, SP, and doubtless handier than mine. I do swab swatches, too, but on index cards along with a line of writing from a couple of pens. I also have an ink note book divided by color family with all the color family samples on the same page--but I should have made that a loose leaf for additions!

Thank you for sharing this -- this is a great idea for all of us with too many inks to keep straight!
