Dani Trio---Opinions?

QM2, many thanks for the info. I have a Nakaya Piccolo just like yours and find it a perfect everyday writer. Before I bought it I thought it would be too small, but I had an opportunity to try one out and was very surprised at how well it fit in my hand, accordingly I bought one. Your Danitrio looks rather large in comparison and I think "mutant cucumber" is an apt description. Nevertheless, I'm going to try to track one down in my vicinity so I can give it a try.

Rufus: I find that a Piccolo is *the* perfectly sized pen as well, but it was surprisingly easy to take to the size my Danitrio Takumi Mt Fuji! :)

I have a Takumi in Tamenuri with a Stub nib and it is in every way, shape and form a glorious object and a wonderful writer.

I just have one Dantrio, a Tempo. It is a beautiful pen, heavy and well balanced. It is a bit too stingy with ink flow so I have sent it to Dantrio to see what they can do. I'll let you know what I think of their service when the pen gets back home.

Well I am proud to report that Danitrio fixed my issue and gave me the best service and communication that anyone could ask for. What a pleasure to write with my new Tempo!!

Where could someone pick up one of the lower end dan's? I looked and can only find the maki-e models.

I would like to know also--especially a raw ebonite eyedropper! Any help would be appreciated!

Raw ebonites have been discontinued, so they would only be available used, and, since they were not in wide production, and were never really lower end pens, the price would likely not be lower end.

That being said, it depends on where you put the break point on lower end. On eBay, FPN member speerbob has a few in the $250 - $350 price range, and ebay seller triojoe (seen him on ebay a lot, never done business with him) has some celluloid Toscas for a BIN of $109 - $169. FPN member winedoc (Operadoc on ebay) also sometimes has Cum Laudes on auction rather than BIN, and they go for around $100. A completed auction search would give you what they have been selling for on ebay, and you would have a price range with which you can work.

I am not affiliated with either speerbob or winedoc, although I have been a very happy, sometimes bordering on ecstatic, customer of both, on both FPN marketplace, and ebay.

edited to note that winedoc's ebay name is operadoc.

I am relatively new to Dani's and have 3 Tosca's, brown ebonite, green ebonite and a red/blue rust. I will say they are well made and consistent, solid performers. So reliable I always pack at least one for those extended business trips.

I have owned/own several Danitrio's they are simply excellent pens. They are beautiful insruments with incredibly smooth and dependable nibs (although they do tend to be a tad soft). My all time favorite is my Negoro-nuri pictured below, I believe there were only two made (not sure who has the other)... Here is Kevin's description:

"Negoro-nuri: Negoro-nuri was started in the Kamakura period (1185-1333) by monks of Negoro temple who attached importance to practical use such as dinner wares or containers. It was painted with black Urushi several times on the red Urushi. If black Urushi is used as base, then it is called Akebono-nuri. It became famous because when the red Urushi wore off from general wear and tear, the black Urushi began to show from underneath (the opposite for Negoro-nuri). This look of natural wear was considered to be very refined.

The pens produced here is to make them look "vingtage" as if the pens have survived hundreds of years, with the "wear and tear" look, and the final result is simply amazing. The surface is uneven with "cuts" and "bumps" just like something you would find on an antique piece. This adds to tactile sensation and I guarantee, you will stare at this pen for a long time as you held the pens in your hands. And guess what, no two pens are exaclty alike!"

Note: Kevin takes incredible pictures as we all know, but even his skill doesnt capture the red as much as it shows through. Sorry Kevin, no offense mate.

As for the other lower models, if you are able to get your hands on Tosca's or Cum Laude's they are great pens irrespective of price point. Buy one you won't regret it.

Imagine that. A pen company that actually fixes the problem on a pen the first time.

Good to know in case I ever need service.

Here are the seven Danitrio's that I have. I would love to be able to have one or more of the maki-e pens, they're beautiful. Someday! Meanwhile I am enjoying these.

I bought a closeout of all new pens recently that came with quite a bit of Danitrio. I sold several but have two raw ebonite (Mikado I think), one with a clip and one without. Two screen tamaki, one with Chinese children and one with Flowers. Two Kara-nuri clipless in red with red spots. I also have a bit of several other models including the brillant, one classic horn and some others. If you're looking for anything email me at speerbob@starpower.net. Cheers, BOB

I think I found their website - and they do look fantastic, but the standard urushi finishes are running at least twice the price of a Nakaya - Am I missing something?

It depends on which danitrio you're looking at. Some of the larger eyedropper models are quite large pens +/- eyedroppers which can be quite large. For instance, the Danitrio Densho compares to the MB 149 in terms of grip size.

I suggest contacting Kevin Cheng at www.internetpens.com who is a well known (and trusted) FPN member and physician who spends his spare time servicing and selling all things Danitrio :)

In Rotation: MB 146 (EF), Noodler's Ahab bumblebee, Edison Pearl (F), Sailor ProGear (N-MF)

In storage: MB 149 (18k EF), TWSBI 540 (B), ST Dupont Olympio XL (EF), MB Dumas (B stub), Waterman Preface (ST), Edison Pearl (0.5mm CI), Noodler's Ahab clear, Pilot VP (M), Danitrio Densho (F), Aurora Optima (F), Lamy 2000 (F), Visconti Homo Sapiens (stub)
