Pilot 1970s black stripe MP

Hi guys,

This is slightly off-topic but still about writing instruments. I received two mechanical pencils from the 1970s in their original case and boxes. One is a Pilot 2+1 (Mechanical pencil, Blue and Red ink) and the other is a Mitsubishi Sharp 1-Sharp 2 (0.5mm lead pencil, and 0.5mm red lead pencil)

The pilot one has partially etched black stripes on it and it is extremely well made. It is stainless steel of course. The Mitsubishi is made of brushed aluminum (i think) and they are both really high quality instruments.

Cool, they look very similar. I saw the Pilot 2+1 on display at Pilot Pen Station. I always thought it was a relatively new pen and was surprised to see that it was introduced in 1977. It's not a perfect match but it seems that it was meant to fit in the Pilot black stripe family.

Thanks for sharing.

I've been noticing a rather significant spike in vintage Japanese ballpoints and mechanical pencils, especially if made by Pilot and in stainless steel. I wonder why the resurgence... perhaps people looking to make complete sets out of their fountain pens? I saw one close on FleaBay for the seemingly absurd price of $174! And it doesn't match any Pilot pens I've seen. Anyone else here on a mechanical pencil quest?

I've got NOS sets of The Volex and Elite Steel Black Stripe...need a Murex SS pencil to "complete" that set...did they even make one?

I've sold several Murex sets inclusive of FP, BP, and MP. Yes! The mechanical pencil exists.

One of my acquaintances in Japan has made a small (very small) living off of mechanical and drafting pencils. Seems to be very strong collector interest in many models. Regarding those made by the Big Three, an almost infinite array exists. Included in this group should also be makers like Mitsubishi, Zebra, Sakura, and Newman. Newman was an especially prolific maker who went under or was bought out in the early 1970s.

Speaking of mechanical pencils... I have seen a few auctions that went off the charts on price. A few months ago, a steel Tombow mechanical pencil practically touched $200. I'd never seen anyone pay so much for a 70's/80's vintage mechanical pencil. Just yesterday, a Pentel Mechanica MP crossed the $250 barrier! It came with box and papers, in mint as-new condition. Yet... the price still seems so incredible to me.
