Noodler's Beaver

Thanks for postin. This is chocolade brown colour that I was looking for (and end up with everything else).

Wow, this may be the brown I've been looking for.

Most browns I've tried have been either insipid or poor-flowing.

I like the color of Penman Mocha, sometimes.

I like Noodler Standard Brown.

But I haven't found the ideal rich, warm, runny brown - in a fountain pen ink - something like the ink version of those pools of milk chocolate at the Hershey factory...

The results of the paper towel chromatography shouldn't be surprising. Not if you’ve ever played with Play Doh as a kid (or as an adult?) and mixed all the colors together thinking you’ll get a super color - after all you’re mixing lots of colors together! Then got disappointed because all you had was brown, and all those great colors were gone

Something similar happened to me a couple of months ago. I mixed Noodler's Grizzly with, I think, Waterman Florida Blue. I was hoping for a darker blue with maybe an interesting, visible brown tinge to the resulting mixture. Well, of course brown and blue make gray. So I ended up with a rather dull looking gray ink. It was quite boring and disappointing. Of course I should have known better.

One slightly interesting aspect of this mixture is that after a water test you're left with a light brown line after the blue washes away completely.

On a sacred quest for the perfect blue ink mixture!

hmm.... i missed this thread somehow...

I think i may be in trouble. I'm trying *not* to add inks back into my collection. But that does look like the brown i've always wished i could find. Penman Mocha is great - but sometimes too grey. Likewise Levenger Cocoa (which tends to bleed) and Havana Brown is a bit too red at times. This looks smack dab in the middle - a "true" brown if my monitor can be trusted.

Next time I'm at Dromgoole's maybe.

i have both Noodlers Walnut and Beaver. Walnut is definately a darker brown. I prefer Walnut to Beaver.

Matt C.

Matt, how would you compare how they flow. I tend to prefer fairly free-flowing inks.

thanks,

Bill

Bill,

Sorry to get to your question so late. Sometimes I forget where I have posted something. If I remember correctly flow is about the same in both walnut and beaver. It has been a few months since I have used the beaver ink though.

I really like this color. I have this thing where I like my ink to stay put on the page, or I won't use it. So I test every ink I have to see if it passes my water test. I had some walnut which resisted pretty well, but eventually only left me with black when I wanted brown.

Has anyone one tried to replicate beaver as a bulletproof ink yet? If not, I think I'll try.

You can darken FPN Galileo Manuscript Brown by adding Noodler's Black, as I did here. The resulting mix is completely waterproof. To replicate Beaver, you would probably need less black than I used. Have fun! :)

I really like brown ink, and this one (Noodlers Beaver) seems to be exactly what I am most looking for. But there's always a rub, isn't there? I am also somewhat addicted to the idea of truly waterproof ink. So now what do I do? Wait for a waterproof version of this ink? The problem is that in coming up with a waterproof version, Nathan might not be able to replicate this wonderful velvety Beaver he's come up with.

Arrrggghhh! :bonk:

I am in the process of ordering some waterproof inks, so I can try and replicate the color as a waterproof ink. I will post when I have the formula.

You sound mighty confident, saying "when" instead of "if". I hope you succeed. I'll track this thread, just in case you do. :)

Well, I've never seen this ink in person so it will really only be a guess. I've mixed a few colors in the past and I couldn't tell the real noodlers from my made up one. I figure either way I'll get my own brown that I like.
