where to find shellac

Is there any chance of finding the proper shellac anywhere except online? I don't mind getting it online, but if I can find it locally (no B&M pen shops) I can get started this weekend and not have to wait on shipping :)

Hobby Lobby, maybe? Michael's?

I don't know where you are but a good wood working store or supply. I buy mine in flakes and make my own.

Try searching here: https://www.zinsser.com/WhereToBuy.Asp?SID=34

Most hardware shops. If not listed as Orange Shellac, try Amber Shellac. Same thing, i'm told.

I got mine at Home Depot, but I saw it at Lowe's too. It was almost $10 but it will last you a lifetime.

I also looked for shellac (orange) but none was available but after reading DA BOOK, I said to myself if he used nail polish why not... so I set on on a mission, ...did look kind of gay when I asked for nail polish help at the store but I was pointed to a good hard clear sealent ... It has worked for me , it has worked in the past ,,,so why wont it work in the future...ill try to uplaod a picture of what I bought...and with thte built in brush a plus...you can really apply glue / sealent where needed with no mess..

my two cents worth

I'll try Lowe's or Home Depot for the Zinsser stuff, but if I can't find it I might default to some Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails. This is clear nail polish that dries pretty hard. Another hobby, fly tying, keeps me in supply of the stuff. It makes a nice CHEAP replacement for head cement :)

Franks idea to use nail polish is one of several ideas that IMO should be whited out in Da Book. I do not use it, and do not recommend or suggest using it.

Nail polish contains solvents that can damage your pen. It also breaks down in the presence of water. Shellac OTOH has been used for a long time (and safely) in pen assembly and repair. Dump the nail polish, use shellac. It really is a common wood finish found in most hardware stores and home centers. Most hardware stores sell it in half pint cans for under $5. You can use either orange or clear shellac.

I am a big fan of the flakes. It is easy to mix up a small amount and not have it sitting around for years. It also allows you to change the consistancy which can be useful at times. And it's cheap!

NO! Don't use nail polish. It's bad.

Pendemonium sells a small bottle (w/brush attached to cap) for @ $5.

A little goes a long way, and this will last years.

This is easier than wrestling the bigger containers from the hardware store!

I got a half-pint can at Ace Hardware for I don't remember how much, but not very much, and it will last me about a hundred years. (Actually it will last me until I leave it open by mistake someday and let it all dry out; I don't do that often, but I'll do it before I use up half a pint on pens...)

I have used clear Nail Polish in work with model planes, it will eat a lot of rubber slowly, I wouldn't use it either. Stick with the dried crushed bugs instead
