The darkest black ink?

Dear Friends,

I just join the forum and I find that it's very interesting. I have just bought Montblanc Chopin and Sailor 1911.

Both pens are good.

With regard to Ink quality, I have tried Private Reserve Ink-Ultra Black and Aurora black. Is there any other brands that may produce more darker in terms of black ink?

Pls advice.

I think Stephen Hawking is about to put out "Essence of Black Hole."

In all seriousness, Pelikan Black, Aurora Black, and Noodler's Bulletproof Black constatnly get recommended for this purpose. I've used Pelikan Black and Noodler's Black, and much prefer the Pelikan because it dries faster. On the other side of the coin, Noodler's Bulletproof Black is, well, bulletproof. Nothing will remove it -- not chemicals, and certainly not water. Aurora is notably more expensive than either of these two, and I question how much darker it could really be.

I stopped thinking about it when I realized that even the cheapest FP ink is sooooo much darker than any black BP.....

I've seen most of these inks together and I promise it's OMB.

That's a matter of opinion. Color perception is an individual thing.

Old Manhattan Black is undoubtedly one of the blackest blacks around. To my eye, though, Noodler's Swishmix Nile Ebony is as black or blacker. Nile Ebony, sold by Swisher, is a mix of equal parts Swisher's Midnight Black, which is made by Noodler's, and Noodler's bulletproof Black. I like to add some bulletproof Black to my Nile Ebony, to increase the bulletproof and anti-feathering properties. YMMV.

Other black inks are mixtures of dark colors. Sailor Kiwaguro is nothing but black. It is the same as Japanese/Chinese brush drawing ink, or India ink, for blackness. There are a couple of reviews on this ink (one by me), and the water tests & scans can do the rest of the talking.

Only problems are: it's expensive and it's not easy to find in North America.

Neill, did you find yours in N. America?

Of all the blacks I've used over the years, and there have been only a handful, Noodler's X-Feather was the blackest... but the dry time was longer than I cared for. Another nice black is Aurora. It's a little more expensive, but I don't economize with ink. I'm lucky to use up a single bottle of the same color in a year, so I don't sweat the extra $3.

No, I bought a bottle when I was in Japan this spring, out of curiosity, and I haven't stopped using it since. But Some others have ordered from Ujuku or bought in cartridges off ebay.

Maybe I should start selling it myself..

I want to try these Noodler's blacks, but I'm not really clear on which one I should get and I don't want to waste what little cash I have.

So the regular is bulletproof and waterproof, yes?

What are the differences with Heart of Darkness and Borealis, I know that Borealis isn't bulletproof but what else?

Levenger Raven Black is my favorite black. It's extremely dark, but it shades a wonderful dark grey. Probably not what you're looking for, but I quite enjoy it.

My opinion is the law.

"But honey, it's blacker than the last one I bought, see?"

This whole thing is quite interesting. Fountainpenhospital calls Noodler's Old Manhattan the "blackest black". But according to the Noodler's website, Borealis is the "blackest of blacks". And yet, Noodler's also says that Heart of Darkenss absorbs as much of the color spectrum as possible. Isn't the objective measure based on how much of the colour spectrum a given black ink absorbs? So I would expect Heart of Darkenss to get the objective vote. But when it comes to the human eye, what can be objectively measured?

And yes, I knew there was another black ink I needed to buy, and yes, I do fall for exclusives like Old Manhattan!

I had the same dilemma a while ago, so I got a few samplers from Pear Tree Pen, including Quink black, J Herbin Perle Noire, Pelikan Black, Noodler's Eel black, Noodler Borealis B, and Noodler's Heart of Darkness.

Using my desk pen and just normal notepad paper, I felt that Heart of Darkness was the darkest of them all. Nothing really came close to its darkness of the ones I tried.

I think I have problem using sailor 1911 with PR ink Ultra black. It looks like the flow is not really smooth. When I write on the paper, the ink was overflow and not really sharp (can see the ink break). I'm using broad nib and by right it's should not be problem.

Just want to check with you whether is it normal for some FPs have problem with the ink used.

Pls advice. TQ

Forgot to add, Aurora Black was among the ones I tested as well.
