Noodler's waterproof test on glossy paper

Ann Finley

Recommended Posts

After already addressing some glossy labels to mail, I wondered if the Noodler's waterproof inks I used would bond with the glossy, coated paper since it appears not to "sink in," but sits on top.

Good news, the label in the following snapshot was soaked 10 1/2 hours in water. (I did let it dry overnight before I soaked it--it looked dry, but was still sitting on top.)

The glossy "multi-purpose" label was from a sheet of Memorex CD labels. I noticed that the orange ink really is bright orange on this coated paper. You may recall that in the ink review I did last November I observed that the orange sunk into the paper so well that it looked like peach. Not so on this paper!

Best, Ann

That's a cool test. I wouldn't have thought of trying to test one of the sticky labels.

This makes me want to visit the pen shop for more interesting ink...

Ann,

I had managed to forget about that color and not buy it - thanks for bringing it back to the attention of my sorely hurting pen/ink budget :P .

Neat test and nice to know.

Thanks for sharing,

I found the same thing on photographic paper for injets, that it sits on the surface, which seems odd since the injet ink doesn't.

Inkjet inks will not typically sit on top of glossy media as much as fp ink due to it composition. Inkjet ink contains penetrants (things like 1,2-hexanediol or triethylene glycol monobutyl ether) and polymer solutions. The penetrants help draw the ink vehicle, and to some extent the colorant, into the meida to aid in dry time and adhesion. The polymer solutions usually form a film at low temperatures, which serves to protect any colorant still on the surface of the media from things like water and scuffing and/or rubbing. I think I would be suprised to see penetrants in fp inks, although I could imagine there could be some amount of polymer in there.

Take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly, and try another. But by all means, try something.

Wow! Thanks, but....

Doesn't sound like something you'd want to accidentally ingest!

Don't worry about the ingesting part. The inks are nontoxic. All the stuff in there are at such low concentrations, you would not see any serious medical side effects. Of course, you would probably be stricken by bouts of nausea  , vomiting :( , and diarrhea :bonk: :bonk:
