Pilot M90

Recommended Posts

Pilot cartridges are extremely common... easy to find on eBay, that's for sure. However, I find it much more enjoyable to refill the cartridge with my ink of choice. Being in the medical field, take a syringe, blunt the end of it (a good metal file will do the trick), and then use it for this purpose. :)

GREAT idea!!!!! I will definitely give this a try!

If only this pen were not so tiny.....

It's not the size, it's how you use it.......

I was going to order this model online but much to my surprise there was one at the Paradise Pen in Indianapolis. I was there on business and decided to stop by on a night when I had an hour to spare. There nestled in the center display cabinet amongst the Visconti's and Montegrappa's was a lone M90. I handled it for a few minutes and that was that. It came home with me.

I flushed it and filled it with Noodler's Legal Blue. It had a bit of tooth at first but is writing smoother and smoother after just one day of use. I got a medium nib and it is considerably finer than my waterman perspective medium. I am really digging it!

I have just put my M90 F in my rotation. I am surprised by its smooth F nib (I was expecting some scratchiness from the F nib, based on my prior experience with Pilot's M nib for the Capless). Using the Con-20 is like driving blind as I have not idea how much ink the converter holds.

The converter holds a decent amount, though there is one small trick to it: watch the sac, and leave the pen in the ink until the sac stops moving (a second or three). That way you don't fill it with air instead of ink!

Finally got mine. It was so frustrating to track it sitting in customs over a weekend. The pen is absolutely gorgeous. Cannot believe how nicely the lines flow. I went with the fine and while I was expecting a super thin line I was astonished by how small I can write with this pen.

A little scratchy at first but after a day or so of use I think it is already starting to smooth out a bit. Amazingly beautiful pen.

One of my students let me try his brand new M90 today. I was very impressed. Smooth and it followed my hand.

It felt good in my hand. M nib.

I really don't like you. You took these with a phone, and they look better than the ones I take with my wife's Olympus? Nice pen though...

Better than Lamy?

:-P :-)

Much better than Lamy. Decided this over Lamy when I was getting my M90. It was either that or the Lamy 2000

That's a heck of a mark up: the MSRP in Japan is 11290円.

At today's rates, that's about 80 quid.

Hehe! Seems like a very successful campaign by Pilot-Namiki. This is now a cult pen.

Hooray! Just received mine in F. Got a great deal on it from Pam Braun, who is a pleasure to order from (this was my first order from her). Filled it with Aurora blue (Pam included the con-20) and set about writing. It was a bit dry for my tastes but super-smooth. A very careful and tiny amount of adjusting has wetted the flow a bit and put it exactly where I want it. What a pleasure to write with!

It certainly is a pleasure to write with. I'm afraid mine is no longer as pristine as shown in the original images: it's well-used, now. Still a great pen, too!

Thank you for your excellent review. Your comment about con-20 is very helpful for beginners.

The list price of M90 is 12,000yen, but the recent market price has already been 15,000yen in

Japan. In fact I can hardly find M90 in Tokyo now.

I think Pilot must be quite happy with the success of this pen. It sold well, and has acquired a good reputation in a short time.

I'm hoping for a black stripes version for the 100th anniversary pen!

That's about the going price for them now. Check here, every once in a while, b/c people sometimes sell them. I wouldn't let mine go for that though... much too hard to hunt down.

It is really bad to discover this pen exists so many years after it was released :( (At the time it was released I was still using ballpoints.) I like it a lot, and would definitely buy one at he original price. However I cannot justify the purchase at the current price level :(((

Is there anything similar readily available at a more reasonable price?
