Today I've been using my blue LAMY AL-Star (which until yesterday I has assumed was a Safari :) ) loaded with LAMY Black and I've also written a letter to an ex-work colleague using an 80 year old dipping pen and Quink Blue/Black.

Basses, watches, fountain pens. Is there more..?

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

A cheap, mass-produced Pilot Varsity with M nib.

Sheaffer Caligraphy Kit, various sized nibs.

A defunct Zebra V-301. Attempt to use is the key phrase.

A Rotring Core with XL nib, filled with Pelikan Brilliant Black 4001 ink.

Wondering what you think of the Pilot Varsity? I just recently saw those and thought they might be fun to experiment with for nib sizes and for my son to try to learn with - he has a VERY heavy hand and ever since he bent a 14K nib out of place after just a couple of words I haven't let him pick up anything that I care about again!

I like the Pilot Varsity. It's good for day to day stuff. I don't mind the scratchiness and it was a good pen to get me back into fountain pens. However, I do mind (a little) the feathering on standard HP Multipurpose 20lb paper.

However, the nib-bending thing has me thinking twice about your son using the Varsity pen. See, it's got a flexible nib. He might bend it too, since it isn't as stiff as 14K nibs. (If they are stiff? I am not 100% sure.)

I suggest a Parker Jotter fountain pen. It was one of my first modern fountain pens, and it'll run you about $10 at an office supply store. If I remember correctly it's on the stiff side. It's sold on-line, too, if you don't have one of those stores nearby -- tag on shipping.

Wait -- were you wanting a wide-tipped nib pen? The Jotter is ball-tipped.

Hope this helps,

Dan
