Fountain Pens Actually Made in France

Parker settled a plant in France after the second world war and they did manufacture vacumatics and aerometric models in France as well. In the 50's some of the high end solid gold MB 149's were made in France. Waterman were made before in the USA till the 50's before the firm installed itself in France. Audiard and Lepine pens are made in France.

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

I posted some earlier in this thread, and in the Waterman/Parker thread. Caran d'Arch, Cartier, Michel Perchin in particular. The rest are factory pens, where the factory happens to be located in France, with French people pushing the buttons.

EDIT: Also, if you could find something akin to what the last poster posted as well. That would probably require a trip to France, but I digress.

Great suggestions. Thus, I continue to play the lottery. On a teacher's salary, though, with one kid in college and another on the way, I find myself most often eating sandwiches at lunch, rather than filet mignon. I'm just presently exploring whether I might enjoy substituting a baguette for the usual wheat slices I use now. :0) Sell a little something here, bargain a little there, and voila!

Golf clubs are much the same way as pens in this regard, I believe, and so I have a acquired a pretty classy set by buying parts and building/adjusting my own. In the case of fountain pens, am not working on that plane as of yet.

Thanks for the suggestions, though. I agree that these are no doubt classier options. Perhaps next lifetime, in the event the lottery doesn't come through.

Have a great afternoon!

S.T. Dupont

The question with S.T. Dupont pens is: where are they actually made? "S.T. Dupont, Paris" is just an indication of the company HQ.

Caran D'Ache is made in Switzerland, it is a Swiss company.

I believe the Dupont pens and their other accessories are primarily made in France. However, some of the trim is imported from elsewhere.

And Caran d'ache contrary to its name is indeed Swiss (but remember Switzerland has three districts: German, French and Italian) -- hence the name! :D

I was told that some Caran pens were made in France. Perhaps I was misled. There is always Cartier (or are they made in Swaziland?).

Good point . . . but all of my ST Dupont pens have the "Made in France" marking next to the serial number.

Jean Pierre Lepine Website makes some pretty wild pens as well as some slightly more sedate models. I have a Samba in blue that somehow seems very Parisian to me. A well balanced, smooth writer. I think in the $100 range

Yes, I forgot about Lepine--I have a Casanova I bought in NM. Lovely pen.

Yeees, thanks for indicating where to look. I have four pens by Dupont (Montparnasse FP, RB & BP, Classique RB) and forgot to look (or to remember, that years ago I may have taken a look) at the side of the clip at the tiny imprint.

I looked at this link again -- to an Oldwin pen. Thank you for sharing it, Jon. After nosing around, I found this article that I thought you and others interested in Oldwin might enjoy:

http://www.stylophilesonline.com/archive/jan03/05old.htm

The link in this article to Andre Mora's shop, though, is wrong. Here is the correct link, and worth visiting: http://www.morastylos.com/

Mora is the one who makes Oldwin, apparently.

In the course of looking for the right link to Mora's shop, I found PenHero.com, a site I'd not heard of before -- and which had the right link to Mora/Oldwin. Probably many on the Board have heard of the site, but for those who haven't, here is the link:

http://www.penhero.com/PenBookmarks_PenDealersVint.htm

Turning back a moment to Oldwin, I am ruined. I see two or three that, in their simple elegance, I could own in a heart-beat. Looks like they're around $600.00, though. Guess I'll get a lottery ticket tomorrow and hope for the best. :0)

Even if I am in pain now -- it's only temporary. Now I at least have some goals -- a three-part quest: next time in Paris, visit Mora Stylos; pray more; buy lottery tickets regularly. :0)

Thanks again, Jon, for the link!

My wife's just had to absorb the concept of the quite large sum I paid for a nice Parker 51 Flighter, so I think I would really have to work hard to justify $600 for a pen, even one as breathtakingly beautiful as that one--so at least for a while, I'll have to just admire Leigh's. :)

  • 11 years later...

I have encountered a dozen brands with "France" on the pens and box but not "Made in France" engraved anywhere like on the recent Parkers. Clearly, this is indication of association rather than origin. So unless you see the "Made in France" engraved on the pen, it is likely not actually made in France.

I never noticed that Parker Quink ink is made in France until today. I had a look at the bottom of my bottle - it's true! ST Dupont, French made. Caran d'Ache, Swiss made... even the pencils!

For the bottom end of the market, Stypen, and Reynolds used to make fountain pens in France. Currently, Bic make fountain pens in France, as they bought out Stypen. It is why the EasyClic has a nib that looks a lot like a Stypen.
