GUIDER Black Jumbo ED

Can someone comment on the finishing of these pens. In the photos there seems to be horizontal microabrasions from polishing on the cap and barrel. Also the clip and nib finishing looks a bit cheap.

I want to buy one of these but want to make sure that despite the price it is a decent pen that will see regular use amongst my pelikans, deltas and auroras. I will most likely keep it for a desk pen since I'm wary of putting an ED in a shirt or jacket pocket.

I think you will be better off not buying this pen. This cannot match the finish on your Pelikans, Deltas and Auroras.

I agree these are on average 30 to 60 dollar pens. No way you can compare them to pens costing 3 to 4 times more. These are great pens for the money and uniqueness and well worth it, but they won't make 5 dollars out 50 cents.

Just my humble opinion as I have 3 of them.

I polished my pens with Novus #1 & #2 and all of the micro-abrasions came out and the pens are now super-shiney, big improvement in finsih. :)

I'll try and post some pictures later this week, with the good camera at work.

As a newbie what is Novus #1 and 2? I also wonder, since the pens are handmade, why does Guider not just use your process to make their pens a little better and charge a little more? Maybe you could suggest your method to them. I am interested in these pens and may get one soon when I can determine which vendor.

Correction, I actually used Novus #3 (Heavy Scratch Remover) and Novus #2 , checkout www.novuspolish.com for more info.

Hi,

First of all, please excuse me for the poor picture quality. These photos were taken with the inbuilt camera of my Nokia N70 Mobile phone..... :-(

I got my order of a Guider Black Jumbo ED about 2 days back. I personally like to use over size/hefty fountain pens with a wet flow and have been a regular and an extremely satisfied user of a RATNAM Mottled Brown Jumbo ED ( This is from RATNAM and not RATNAMSON). So, having fond happiness in using a jumbo sized FP from RATNAM, I decided to order one from Guider Pen Works this time (a solid black coloured one).

Ever since it came, I have been smiling.... :-)

here are a few pictures...

and here is a brief writing sample...... Please excuse my ugly handwriting :-)

I know that the price sounds quite less when compared in Dollars , but I would like to point out that the economics are quite different.... Overall I feel it is a great value for money at its price.....

When you fill this pen do you twist the base of the pen to regulate ink flow?

Thanks,

John

No, that is an exclusive feature of the Japanese EDs.

Does this and other Guider pens have an inner cap, or some sort of inner-cap proxy? This has been a question of mine.

I know that with the Wality pens the large 69 ED pens have a good inner-cap, but the smaller 64 does not (and has significant drying-out issues when capped).

Brahmin Ebonite ED pens do not have inner caps, but have a tapered interior profile to the cap with does more-or-less the same thing.

Wondering how the Guider pens handle the issue?

John

So if you have a lot of ink,

You should get a Yink, I think.

No inner caps (separate component nor in-situ machined step) in any of the Guiders I have handled, However I have seen only a dozen or so of the Guider models so I can't speak for all Guider pens. I have reservations about the placement (location) of breather holes too.

Best,

Hari

PS: I got my example of the Guider Jumbo just now. WOW! :cloud9: I will be reviewing this pen soon, this pen is HUGE.

An update to my reply to Johhny Appleseed's inner cap question:

The Jumbo does have a machined in-situ inner cap. However as per my measurement, the section flange and the inner cap step do not mate even when the cap is fully closed; shy by around 3mm. The taper of the inner surface of the cap mates the section flange before it can engage with the inner cap step acting as a mechanical end stop. Even if the two surfaces were to mate correctly, two breather holes drilled right in the inner cap volume make ink dry-out a feature.

The situation can be remedied by sealing the existing holes with wax and drilling a new hole just below the point where the cap taper and section flange mate.

Despite all this I am seriously impressed with this pen. Huge and very ergonomic too!

I got my Guider jumbo today. It came very fast. I am very impressed with the ebonite and size of the pen. I filled it and the nib SUCKS!! I was prepared for this--it only cost $45 with shipping! I tried to smooth the nib but looking at the tines under a loop--there was no hope! The slit is off--one tine has no tipping material on it--so it will always scratch! The flow was awful also. SOO I removed the nib and feed. The feed channel was severely clogged. I cleaned it out. I took the nib from a Pilot 78G and fit it into the Guider. It is working so nicely now. Now I am wondering if my pilot falcon nib will fit hmmmmmmmm!!

At that price, you should have received the pen in full working condition. :headsmack:

  • 3 weeks later...

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but has anyone heard from Satish at www.guiderpensonline.com???? I ordered some pens weeks ago and was promised a tracking number when they were sent out. Ive pm'ed him here, emailed him at his site and even emailed him at his other blog and still nothing after about 10 days. The paypal funds were of course deposited hours after I made payment.

I'm not getting screwed by waiting to long to make a CC chargeback or file a paypal dispute. If I conducted business like this i'd be living on the street.

Anyone heard from or received from this guy?????

I have tried too to reach Satish by mail, and did not get answer yet, but my previous experience with him was very positive (got 4 pens from him and he's "taken care" of me).

I suggest you take it easy and wait a few days more - may be just some personal problems.

I think the limit for a PayPal dispute is 45 days (but you should check).
