Sealing wax, Seals and things

Something else that may be of interest to FPN members is that I began to have a problem with the seal sticking to the wax, ruining the seal. The people at Casse Noissette Stationary here in Old Montreal told me to put the seal in the freezer or on an ice cube for a few minutes before doing a seal. This fixed the problem.

Anything that creates a moisture barrier between the seal and the wax will work for this. Personally, I just breathe on the seal right before I use it. The freezer probably works more because the seal will be cold enough to accrue a small layer of condensation before you use it than because of the temperature itself, I suspect.

Do they still make seals and sealing wax these days?

Ohhhh, yeah. Hie thee to Atelier Gargoyle (http://www.ateliergargoyle.com/), where they have some of the best sealing wax and seals available. Also the *best* customer service I've ever encountered.

I'm not affiliated with them - just a happy customer.

For sticking seals, one might also experiment with pigment inks, like the kind scrapbookers use. Colorbox MicaMagic line works well, and gives a nice effect/chance to color-combine.

Yep I've used gold ink and it makes the background the gold. Also as a little trick once the seal is impressed and cooled I take a pencil eraser and stamp it on the ink pad then use it to color the raised part of the impression. It makes it really stand out.

Dear bushellk, chud, WhosYerBob, hellkitty and (bleep);

Thank you so very much for adding to the topic of seals and sealing wax.

Hellkitty, I think you are very creative in regarding the ink, eraser and bringing some 'shaddow' like qualities to the seal.

Many wonderful pieces of advice!

Respectfully,

Maria

just because I am arrogant and self centered and want to get as much glory for myself as possible... I mentioned the eraser trick :thumbup:

Anytime. Personally I use the Atelier Gargoyle wax for things that have to go through the mail; if you want to PM me your address I'll be happy to send you something with an example seal or two.

  • 6 years later...

Did anyone else notice that the stamp is a positive?

If it was used, the impression in the wax would be reversed Left/Right.

Please note that the photos have been reversed to best show the designs, sorry for any confusion
