That writing slope is very nice.

Thank you! I've wanted one for so long and I'm so glad to have that.

Shangas...did you make your slope? I would love to make one!

If I could make that, I would be sitting on a goldmine.

It's an antique from 1863.

Hahaha!!

I don't often use the slope (hey, it's 150 years old for chrissakes...), but I do take it out occasionally to clean it and fiddle around with it, and occasionally write on it or use it.

I took the slope out to lubricate the lock (which was fairly stiff. Works fine, now) and to clean the ivory. Once I had it out, I decided I had to photograph it.

Something else I had on my desk is this:

An antique brass desk-set. Two candleholders, inkwell and pen-rest. You can see the candleholders in the previous photograph, and the whole set in the photograph behind that one.

I finally got my desk more or less cleaned up and presentable. Here it is with my docked laptop computer and the external monitor, I really like having two screens to work with. The desktop computer in the lower left cubbyhole just runs the lighting and security and is not connected to any network. It is, however, connected to a port on the big monitor and it has its own keyboard and mouse tucked into the cubbyhole with it. I can switch the monitor to that computer with just a couple of button presses on the monitor on the rate occasions that I need to check or update that computer.

Underneath the main desk are two UPS units and the cable modem. Above are some toys and CD-ROM storage. The gear train gadget is actually a clock. To the left of the desk is a silverware chest that has been converted for pen storage; inks in the top compartment, pens in the four drawers and boxed sets in the bottom compartment. The light colored seven-drawer chest under the desk extension to the right is mostly full of Targas. The small black box next to it is mostly empty but has some mechanical pencils and ballpoints in it. And the tool chest in the background to the right has more fountain pens.

Very cool. Extra points for having on display an R2 unit, several Federation cruisers (see NCC-1701-D, possibly NCC-1701 or -A), Terok Nor, and...is that Master Yoda next to it?

There's no Yoda, that's a Koala. And I won't blame you for not recognizing the alabaster statue in the back. That's Oscar, the squadron insignia of the 66th Squadron, 57th Fighter Group, USAAF, nicknamed the Exterminator Squadron, in WWII. (My Dad's squadron.)

Gerstner should make a dedicated pen box.

So I must put my overhaulled Union and Gerstner used during my Engineering career to another use.

Wow, great stuff!

  • 1 month later...

My desk is a dining table that I use for work. It was less expensive than any office desk I could find at Ikea. It is somewhat huge, but the space is useful for having a typewriter, my laptop or books at hand.

Directly behind me, when I set there, is my writing supply closet where the sick amount of stuff (pencils, inks, notebooks) is stored.

My more expensive pens that are not inked are kept in the vault where I store my knives.

I´ve lately been trying to minimize my possessions to some extent, but you could still lock me up in a writing supply store over a weekend and have a happy camper.

The desk is not a neccessary "work"-space for me, it is just a sphere that I feel to be needful for hobbies...;)

I hope I have a better computer!

But, yes, this room is essentially unchanged since it was built some time in the 1960s.

However, it was flattering to hear that it looks like something from a movie!

It might amuse you to know that the real-life teacher who was the inspiration for Professor Snape in the Harry Potter series taught chemistry at the equivalent of a high school in Britain, likely in a room much like yours (though I doubt the cabinetry looked so good).

A friend of mine counted him as a personal friend and has wonderful tales to tell about his caustic attitude stemming from his need to keep the students safe against those same students' carelessness with hydrochloric acid and the like.

I attended junior high science class in a room that looked a lot like yours. The tables were the same in my physical science classes at university as well, but those tables were taller and we sat on stools.

Is there life before death?

It is funny to hear about the inspiration for Professor Snape. I know that my personality could never inspire such a character. I'm glad to hear my cabinetry looks good. I take care of my stuff, and one of the things I like about North Dakota is that people in general take care of things. My predecessors also took good care of the room.

It's worth noting that my room is not up to modern code, and there is a much nicer science room next door, but the man teaches classes that would be fine in my room: anatomy, geology, and advanced biology. When I interviewed for this job, I was shown his room and was told that it would be mine. After I signed the contract, a math teacher was put in that room and I got my current room. I made it work, but probably would not have signed the contract had I known that would happen. At least now there is an actual science teacher in that room.

I've taught in several schools in two different states. I have also visited a number of schools. I won't say the school where I teach is the best I've ever seen. It's not. The best science room I've ever seen is in Underwood, North Dakota. But, my school does have very nice facilities, and even the rooms like mine that have not yet been renovated are still in very good shape. I've taught in some rather depressing classrooms.

Proud resident of the least visited state in the nation!

What sits in front of my computer:

http://s271.photobucket.com/user/dick168/media/P1030455_zpsdd1d78c9.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0

My good Pelikan pens and other German pens of the 50s are neatly stashed and semi-organized, the rest are in cups representing various Royal marriages and other remembrances. My mechanical pencils (mostly FEND) are in a glass jar. Books, stationery, art materials, are in disarray in drawers, shelves, and piles.

How I get anything done is a wonder. Well, maybe I don't get anything done.

Dick
