This is a picture of my couch desk. It's because I'm too lazy to go to my real desk.

Why is the fly swatter there? I'm writing on fly paper, of course. :)

Here's a portable escritoire I found at our local antique mall. I'd love to know its provenance but there was no information accompanying it.

I can fit a small ink bottle in it as well as many pens, but for this shot, I've just posted my Bayards: the safety, Niveauclair, Fit, LE4, and the 715. I'd like to eventually fill it with Bayards!

Thanks for looking!

I recently got a new computer and retired the old desktop machine. The new one is a laptop with a dock, so I kept the monitor and keyboard from the old computer and now have a two-display workstation. Actually, the old computer is still down there in the lower left corner running the house lights, it's not connected to the network and just sits there doing its job. It is connected to a port on the big monitor and there is an extra keyboard and mouse handy for times I want or need to update the lighting schedule, but I haven't needed to do that yet. Underneath the keyboard drawer is a shelf that holds the cable modem and two UPSs. The two cords hanging down off of the big monitor are a mini and a micro USB cord for connecting to a camera, Kindle, Garmin or what-have-you; always handy. The gadget with the fan visible behind the cords just described is a dock for 3.5" hard drives. Just drop in a bare drive and run a backup to it at USB 3.0 speed; very nice.

And yes, I have too many knick-knacks but I love my toys.

That's a great find. The fact that it is flat on the back without any of the fancy moulding that appears on the other sides makes me wonder if it was mounted against some kind of wall or partition at one time.

I have a Black X docking station for connecting internal hard drives externally. I like yours with the built in fan better. Where did you get it?

Another picture (in the open air) - Still life: fountain pens with Mexican pottery from Oaxaca.

I love this beautifully colored ceramics in which I hold the FP's I use daily.

Beautiful work area. It looks so serene.

Thank you! That's something I'd not thought about.

I think it's part of something bigger too; my guess is a dressing table. Perhaps this, and another opposite, were placed either side of the central mirror.

Sincerely, beak.

Do you think so? Alone, I love its charms but as part of a dressing table, I imagine I might have overlooked it. It seems as if it would be too hulking, especially with another one.

Took this about a fortnight ago, to serve as the cover of a magazine I'm working on. My desk, at home.

I love the composition!

The thing I like most about that little desk/box is the word "escritoire". I never heard that before. Kind of like abattoir but without all the mess, and lots more elegant. I do a lot of antiquing, and I will never just call them "portable writing desks" again. Thanks!

I got it on Amazon.com, it's made by StarTech.com. Model number SATDOCKU3SEF.

I love etymology and escritoire originated from the medieval Latin scriptorium.

Well, I can add escritoire to the increasingly long list of words that I never ran across despite taking 4 years of French.

Look what I ran across on Sunday at a flea market. I didn't buy it, but I shot some pix for you.

Actually, I bet I saw 15-20 escritoires, including a very old leather one that was ornate and complex with a small (possibly ivory) label that indicated it was made by a company in London. It was large enough to be categorized more as a writing chest than just a portable desk. It had many compartments, including one that held an inkwell with a lid and a brass catch. The lid had a rubber stopper built-in to cover the uncapped ink bottle. This inkwell box was marked "Ink", and there was another small box like it in the other corner of the writing surface that was empty, but curiously it was labeled "Light". The lid of the chest lifted to display a rack with a bunch of slots for writing materials and which exposed a leather writing surface, and under the writing surface was another large compartment that held a fairly thick sheaf of large blotter pages. The top layer of blotter was covered with old style flex pen ink marks from possibly decades of blotting. It almost looked like something that Arthur Conan Doyle might have used in preparing his Sherlock Holmes manuscripts.

It was $150, and I didn't buy it. I had other frish to fy.

You're kidding. Where do you live? Must be nice to have such a selection. The one you've described sounds heavenly. I think I might have made an offer.

I love it out there. Growing up, I spent most summers there with my cousin.
