Great idea!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Here's what I've been using the last few days since I gave my 5 year old my Ikea desk and my iMac (don't feel too bad, got myself a retina MBP)

I could use some help getting this desk some more. I'm trying to figure out how to get light onto the desktop and still be able to close it up (it's in our guest room).

I'd also like ideas on how to set it up to use my laptop on it with an external monitor eventually.

I have no suggestions on the lighting; I just wanted to say how much I loved the desk and the vintage books and the chair.

Gotta bump this thread because it's still one of my favorites.

Another vote for LED lights. I have small LED rope lights that plug into the wall, I bought during the holidays. Some little battery powered LED buttons that stick to any surface. And a pair of LED sticks that plug into a USB port on the computer, I used these a lot with my old PowerBook.

That's a tough trick to get an external monitor in that small space, no ideas there.

No one is born hating another person because of the colour of their skin their background or their religion. People must learn to hate and if they can learn to hate they can be taught to love for love comes more naturally to the human heart than it's opposite.

I spy a Basildon Bond, WH Smith, and Parker...

I, being a vain creature, would have to clean my desk before posting. So cleaning it is.

Tes rires retroussés comme à son bord la rose,

Effacent mon dépit de ta métamorphose;

Tu t'éveilles, alors le rêve est oublié.

The right-hand ell of my desk is usually a little bit... pennier, but my battlestation has grown a bit lately with the addition of a crummy netbook and its peripherals and a new HOTAS setup, so it's pushed my peanut butter jars of pens and my couple of notepads almost off the edge -- my meager collection of bottled inks have already been displaced to the top of the bookshelf.

ETA: Er... I wasn't drinking straight from that growler - it's full of water: something in the bezel of that case is slightly loose, and it rattles like crazy unless there's something hefty weighing it down.

I don't particularly like my desk - the actual piece I mean. On its own it's not so bad, but it's the kind of corporate reception inspired office furniture style that only looks okay with pretty much nothing on it. The worst is that the MDF top which is painted a gloss white is rather yellowed, and I hate it! When I bought it I only chose it because it was the least offensive of the ones that met all my practical requirements (I had many of those and lots of conflicting ones at the time) and was also cheap enough to make sense as the temporary solution it was intended for. In the end it's been three years so it's not that temporary - as usual, lol. Worse, all but one of those practical requirements have changed now, but I still haven't gotten round to finding something I like better! Grrr.

I generally finish off the day by putting stuff away, but instead of waiting to get the photo when it's tidy I thought I'd embrace the desk's MDF ugliness in all its glory and just show it all disheveled with all kinds of clutter on it:

When I have a nicer desk I will post a pretty 'magazine desk' photo lol.

I'm not affiliated with ANY of the brands/retailers/shops/ebay sellers/whatever I mention or recommend. If that ever changes, I will let you know :)

If the size and height are ok for you, why not ask a local handy-person (nearly said handyman) to make a nice drop-over wooden top? Could make it look more appealing and so on, and should cost very little.

Sincerely, beak.

At this point and with the prospect of changing this within the next few months, spending any money making it look better is probably just akin to throwing money away lol. The problem is I don't much like the legs either, or the overall shape of the top with the rounded edges - it was pretty much something that only ticked the practical boxes, and looks wise I found it just bearable rather than something I actually liked. Now the practical needs have changed for the more flexible, I'm chafing at the less-than-stellar looks.

But thanks for the suggestion! It is something to bear in mind for the future, because in my experience this sort of thing does come up with furniture that is intensely functional, like desks or storage pieces.

Two weeks ago at the local auction, a 5ft oak rolltop desk sold for $35. I promise you, I would have bought it if I'd known. Those old desks with all the cubbies are wonderful.
