Some of you may remember a photo I posted of my IKEA computer stand that I've been using as a "desk" for several years, and how I've longed for a proper gentleman's desk. Well, I recently retired from the Air Force, and for a retirement gift my wonderful wife bought me this roll-top desk that we found in a local consignment shop for $200! It's a J.F. Dietz #3 banker's desk, made in Cincinnati circa 1910-1920, and it measures 72" W x 38" D. The hutch and desktop come off the base, and when the drawers are removed it's surprisingly easy to move. But assembled, it ain't moving! I've been trying to find information about this desk or the manufacturer on the web, but so far I've had no luck so if any of you are knowledgeable about this sort of thing please chime in.

My study (what I was using as one anyway) has since become a junk/storage room, so I've taken up residence on the dining room table. Doesn't get used much anyway except Sunday, when everything is ignominiously shoved to one side.

I spend my writing sessions at the dinner table as well, cleared of most clutter. Here's a picture of a fairly dark Thursday morning:

A tiny bit of clutter is left: some books, a tea pot etc:

How do people sit on wooden chairs? I am only comfortable on leather rollies.

I've destroyed a few of those, so I changed it classic old style armchair. Seems much better for my back.

This is where I spend my evenings, many times until late at night. The desk, an auction find for $5, is large and solid oak. In the back you can see my new ink window display, which was an interior window, now put to good use. The desk blotter is hand made and is my fall desk blotter. The blotter paper is a deep vermilion. Unfortunately, you can see the the chair, I refer to it as the "Beast", that I had forgotten to move out of camera range. That chair will go away, as I've put in word out to Santa, or in my case, Santas. :vbg:

Please forgive the poor picture quality.

The ink window is 7ft tall by 36 inches.

Very nice desk and similar to mine. They're quite large.

Beautiful desk and how very thoughtful of your wife to give you something that you really wanted.

Congratulations on your retirement!

That ain't messy where I come from. In fact, it's quite charming.

What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about?

Here is my desk. I love it. Firstly its heavy, made out of solid wood hand done... and its HUGE. Like 6x3.5 feet. If im sitting I can barely reach the other side. Perfect for a row of books against the wall, leaving a 'normal' amount of desk space. PLUS this desk has history.

It was actually a reporters desk for my local newspaper. When the original owner retired he took two desks with him, and when he passed his family sold one to me. It has the original key to lock up the drawers, burn marks on top from his cigarettes, and even little worn spots where his typewriter sat (where my typewriter now sits as I collect them).

This pic was taken the day I got the desk, so it is MUCH messier now that i've gotten all my nick nacks all over it :)
