Here are my desk in Sweden. The lighting is quite dark and my phone is not that good at exposure control, though.

My "new" analog desk:

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j111/kiavonne/Desk/aRed122.jpg

It was my birthday gift to myself after the birthday tornado. I don't have it filled yet, most of my pens and inks and stationery are still in storage. Here's a slideshow link for a couple of more pictures.

Oh, you wanted the other desk? Um, maybe later (when I clean it).

The top is slanted for writing, but no it does not open. Instead, the two drawers are full length. I have the key for them. I can get locks to go into the lock position, but I can't get them down again (fortunately did not do this while the drawers were closed). I'll have to figure out the trick. Old heavy skeleton keys tend to have some kind of quirk or trick to them.

Is that what is referred to as a "Captain's desk"? It is very cool. I'd love one some day. They are compact like your's but also have lots of drawers and often a railing to keep things from sliding off while the ship rolls which I don't see so just curious what type of desk it is called.

Very nice desk, Kiavonne. Glad to see things are back in order. Enjoy it.

Craig, your desk is a beauty as well. My style, also.

Thanks for sharing the pics.

Yes, this is what is referred to as a "captain's desk" or Davenport desk - after Josiah Davenport who commissioned the first of this design in the late 18th century to be used on his ship. The gallery was useful for keeping some things in check while on board a ship, but when not in use, everything was stored inside drawers and under the lids (if they lifted, which I think most did). Many of the desks had another drawer on the side that was actually a long, narrow drawer to hold an ink well and pens. The side door has a space that rolled up maps would be stored in.

The design of the desks caught on and they were very popular in the 19th century. Many of the desks actually did not see any time on the seven seas, they were just coveted for the space saving features. Often times, the side door was eliminated or "just for looks." Sometimes a set of faux drawers (facades) were put on the opposite side of the real drawers, maybe for a "balanced" look, but I couldn't say for certain. What I do know is, it's hard to find an antique one in good shape - and considered affordable. It's just as hard to find a well-built modern one. Ebay has a couple of really cheap ones, but shipping nets an arm and a leg. There is one at Design Toscano that I considered, until I saw this one and jumped at the chance to own the antique.

Writing desk:

$29 outdoor plastic round tables. I got 2 one for my husband and one for me.

Chairs are Target folding chairs.

We had to leave behind the pieces that were a little nicer when we moved cross-country.

I had never ever imagined moving across a continent and decided to donate all the big pieces of furniture.

This is my desk at my university. I cleaned it today (took most of the day) because the organized guy by the window is out of town. The shock of seeing my desk this clean will probably result in me having the whole office for myself :-)

Pens and inks are normally not on display but I couldn't resist putting tham on parade even though my selection of pens at work is rather meager.

I'm actually not a Rohrer und Klingner fanatic but they are very cheap in the local artshop (and a lot easier to collect than Noodler's)

Not shown: Three more laptops. I actually have more laptops than pens!

On the pin-up board is a picture of my desk that a former office mate took two years ago (the last time it was clean - he placed it there to inspire me)

I fully apologize for the mess, I'm going to clean it tomorrow and as you can see my desk is rarely used for actual writing or study. The second picture is the only FP related item in the room, on top of the amp behind the devil duckey is my bottle of Velvet Black PR ink

Here is my desk. Life as an International Baccalaureate 10th grader:

Electronics, pens, journals, textbook, supplements, ink... very disorganized, and very messy.

My ink drawer. I need more ink, most of my colors are dull...

Some of my pens in their cardboard holders (nibs up!!)

Catalog, Lamy 2000, Moleskine, IB/AP Art History Textbook (that class is EXTREMELY difficult), the book underneath the catalog is a Larousse Spanish synonym antonym supplement.
