I think I posted before, but it was before my "desk" area had matured -- so here's an update. After the manner of my ancestors (and hippies), I am a "floor sitter." This just means that the world is my desk!

P.S. Tomorrow is "clean up" day, after which I can't find anything. By the time I get things to where I can find everything, it's clean up day again...

Doug,

I have wanted to try the chair-less setup for a long time now. Yours looks great! How do you like it? I'm wondering if it gives you a sore back or if you just get used to it after awhile?

This is one of my favorite threads. It's like getting an invite to my fellow pen nuts' homes for a drink and a good cigar. I had taken some desk photos for another thread and decided to double my posting fun.

Here's my basement office:

The blonde oak desk and credenza are made by Davis Furniture in High Point, as is the Motion desk chair upholstered in light gray ostrich leather. They're currently twenty years old, but have held up like champs.

The pens are Delta's Dolche Vitae desk set. I ordered a second fountain pen for the set to replace the ballpoint - so I have a FP on the right in broad for signatures and short notes - and a FP on the left in medium for all those small little boxes in all those forms. I think these are now available in white, all black, and green - but the original orange looks right with the blonde oak.

The credenzas hold most of the office stuff - when I'm working I have papers spread over every square inch of the desk. The right data pod has an eighteenth century burled walnut knife box converted to a stationery valet. A second stationery box is on the same credenza (behind the desk chair) - it's a contemporary purpose built box by Venlo - it's really nicely done.

Off to the side is my humidor from Hillwood. Nothing cures writers' block like a snifter of brandy and a good cigar.

On the other credenza's data pod are my laptop and my iPhone charger and speaker. I like a little light jazz as white noise background music when I'm working on a good letter (or a mediocre post).

So where are the other pens? I actually keep most of my pens on my bedroom "pen dresser" with a couple of Venlo's display boxes, a pen holder by Jac Zagoory, a large Cartier display cabinet for the limited edition pen boxes, and several tightly packed drawers full of ink, cartridges, and other pen stuff. When I get myself showered, shaved, and dressed, the pen wardrobe just seems to fit better in the bedroom, adjacent to the rest of the stuff required to get Ray prepped, polished, assembled and out the door. I am, after all, "some assembly required."

Now to get some real work done.

Early February 2008. View from the desk towards the crowd; sorry but I still use a Nikon F and black and white; I love black and white.

Your desk seems to have a bit more guest seating in front of it than does mine.

Wow. Post some links to your band's music, or maybe a YouTube clip. You must be doing something right to attract those kinds of crowds.

As soon as I get some of the tracks from this concert processed I'll post some links. We'll peel that onion slowly.

I've sent some "raw" tracks to people recently and they really don't appreciate them - they don't understand what's there. They were old tracks recorded on cheap equipment, but had some great bass work on it by a player that's past away, but very well known. It was live and a sound check - raw - I think they expected studio (Potty Mouth).

If you record live you have to be specifically set up for it - all the right equipment and stuff - and it adds a lot of expense, especially when you're on a quick "hit and run" tour. But most musicians carry some kind of recording device to get the "working papers."

I would always rather see the "working papers" rather than the finished product. But, with the commercialism we live under today most people expect the slick studio stuff every time. It just doesn't happen that way. My attitude is that "Donald Duck" can sound good in the studio - but it's only live where you get the genuine stuff. When some tracks from this concert are processed I'll post a link.

Thanks,

Mescof1

All I can say is that the order on these desks are unreal. :crybaby:

These desks are unreal. I dont think they belong to humans.

Hint: no kids = no mess

The rest is just anal-retentive, obsessive-compulsive, anti-entropy goodness.

I've been a floor sitter for most of my life so I'm definitely used to it. Sitting in a chair at the office in front of the desk seems weird, but hey, they're paying me so I can't complain. I've had a wife and a girlfriend from the same tribe of floor sitters as me, but they couldn't manage it very well. I think because women feel some kind of obligation to wear tighter fitting pants...

One of the important factors is what you look at while at the desk. Most architecture is designed for chair sitters so if you floor sit, you can't look out the window. You can see the window and maybe the sky but the window itself is too high. I live in a 70's style condo so I'm looking at floor to ceiling sliding glass doors. I'm looking out at the city lights now, and before I go to sleep I'll probably draw the curtains. A sweet view.

I generally sit at the desk cross-legged, but sometimes with my legs straight out in front of me. If you can't touch your toes easily, this might be something of a problem.

Anyway, for me, it's ideal. My apartment is small and I don't need chairs intruding into my living/working space!

I'd rather spend my money on pens instead of shoes and handbags.

Hmm... Sure would like to get my hands on one of those Cadmium Preludes on your desk. Almost looks orange in the photo. PM me if interested.

Great little desk setup! I love that shelf on which you have all your inks. Did you get that at a national store or a local place?
