Lobbying for new Noodler's bulletproof purple!

And I had another thought for a name/theme. How about "Purple Prose"? It has the historical background of Horace and Queen Elizabeth I (she translated Horace's Ars Poetica (where the term comes from). It would humorously fit with the catfish in a toga image Laeyra mentioned, too.

That sounds cool too!

(Why only one purple? Why not both?)

Dark purple sounds like it'd be right up my alley! I have a dark purple-black that I mix up and call "Black Amethyst Glass". Something a bit lighter than that and bulletproof would be nice for when I don't want to look at my ink in sunlight to tell that it's purple. :)

I just had a rather amusing mental image of a catfish wrapped in a white and purple toga, wearing a leaf crown. Purple Reign, indeed!

I have to say, personally I'd be offended if this were a dark purple purple and had more than subtle Roman/antiquity references in the design/name. Their purple was more reddish. I think of it almost as maroon. (Socrates is decent, though I always think of the Roman royal purple as being a deeper and more red purple. Hey, wikipedia has an entry that agrees with me! (Okay, so Tyrian purple varies, but generally it is more of a reddish purple) More purple)

Anyways, sorry to ruin anyone's fun, and as much as I'd like a dark purple purple with bulletproof qualities, I would not buy any if it had such misgivings in its picture/name. (If it's just a reference to royalty, like "Purple Reign" I'd be quite alright with it. I like the alliteration of Purple Prose. I'm just here to cast my vote against a catfish in a toga or the name Tyrian Purple if we're going for a color that looks more like Tokyo purple in the wikipedia purple article.)

On the other hand, as much as I'd love a dark purple purple for use, I wouldn't be able to resist a real Tyrian purple with a togatus silurus (sheatfish/catfish in a toga) as it's picture. If there were a bulletproof or near bulletproof of that color, I have to say I'd probably turn to it exclusively. Just because I'm difficult like that.

Mmm, even that quoted article notes that Tyrian varies in shade, and that Imperial Tyrian was rather dark. (Cf. the quote from Pliny: ".. the Tyrian hue ... is considered of the best quality when it has exactly the colour of clotted blood, and is of a blackish hue to the sight".) So more red than blue, but dark enough to be tending toward black. FWIW, I think that Tokyo purple is much closer to Imperial Tyrian than is maroon.

No, Concord Grape is not bulletproof. :)

That's a pretty direct comparison. Maroon on left, Wikipedia's image for Tyrian purple in middle (seems to be an accurate representation), and Tokyo purple on right. True that it can vary, and there are probably some examples leaning more towards Tokyo purple, but to me the average/mode/most common shade seems more maroon (not EXACTLY maroon, but more so) than Tokyo. (Though maybe if you mixed Tokyo and maroon you'd get a pretty close shade...)

It'd be cool if a bulletproof ink the shade of clotted blood, matching Pliny's description, was made. >:-}

Interesting links! So now I know that ancient conceptions of a royal purple aren't the same as modern conceptions. Learn something new everyday, as they say.

Impossible to predict, especially with the varying quality of moleskine notebooks lately. I imagine as a bulletproof, it would handle fairly close to the same as the other bulletproofs available. It will bleed and feather on some papers and not on others.

If Nathan's testing it, he can test it on Moleskine....... I'll send him some paper. :D

 :roflmho:

As far as the color and name of the ink this thread is concerned about, though:

I don't want dried blood. I don't want maroon. I don't want fuschia. I don't want burgundy or port or wine. What's wrong with just purple, like the title of the thread says? I don't care what it is called, as long as the color is purple and it is bulletproof. People can have fun with naming, but even now it seems it's turning to a more argumentive side with some disagreement. Now, if Nathan decides to put out another bulletproof in another color, I'll most likely end up with it in my collection, but this time around, I'm really hoping for purple.

This isn't an FPN exclusive ink request but a request for a new bulletproof for Nathan's regular line, though the request originated from an FPN member. kookychick made an inquiry with a dream and got a response that more or less said, "get so many requests and you'll see it happen." Works for me. I've been dreaming of a bulletproof purple, too.

So, in my not-so-valuable-or-humble opinion, bring on the 'possum & catfish dance under the moonlight! No Tokyo Rising and no French Decent. No togas, no crowns, no guillotine, no Tower jewels, and no blood. I think Nathan should stick to his insticts with respect to his regular, non-exclusive line of inks. That's one of the reasons I like Nathan's company, is he isn't afraid to have an opinion and speak it. I may not always agree with it, but it isn't my excellent inks company.

Just bulletproof purple. That's all we're asking for. At least, it's all I'm asking for. If it has the "everything-and-the-kitchen-sink" quality, all the better as far as I'm concerned. However, I'd be absolutely thrilled with just a new bulletproof purple.

You say what I wanted to say before I got derailed and became that argumentative person, sorry. My main point was, if we're going to have a bulletproof purple, then yes, I'd be all for it. But lets not put a toga on it unless it is that real tyrian color.

(That'd be a good exclusive for somewhere, though, I have to say. But a regular, business like bulletproof purple would be best for adding to the regular line.)

As far as I'm concerned, it's not a debate, it's not a group project. This is about an ink kookychick wants to commission from Nathan. I'm buying in.

It's not what "we" want, really. I'm helping her make it happen.

If I want something else, I can either mix it or have Nathan make a small batch for me just the same way he's making one for kookychick.

Agreed, it's not a group project. It is a dream for a permanent addition to his line, though. At least, that was my impression. I hope it will happen. If it is just a special mix this time around, then I am so in for 5 bottles. I'll scrape together the cash somewhere. kookychick and I have been on the same page, and she was the one with the guts to forge ahead and get Nathan's attention. I'm so proud of her!! :D

You seem to have skipped over the section comparing different shades of Tyrian:

  • Bright Tyrian Purple (Bright Imperial Purple) (Tyrian Pink) (Hex: #B80049) (RGB: 184, 0, 73)
  • Medium Tyrian Purple (Medium Imperial Purple) (Tyrian Red) (Hex: #990024) (RGB: 97, 64, 81)
  • Tyrian Purple (Imperial Purple) (Hex: #66023C) (RGB: 102, 2, 60)

For my money, when I think of toga borders I think of the one on the bottom, which is a whole lot closer to purple than maroon. The leading theory is that the color comes from double dipping (once with a medium tyrian dye and once with a blue dye from another shellfish). Certainly the mosaic (whether from limitations of the medium or for artistic effect) does not reflect contemporary descriptions of an almost blackish color.

I'm not biased on what the label should have - as long as its interesting and "fun"! :clap1:

Man, I'm busy for a day, and look what happens! ;)

The bottom line is, whatever Nathan wants to do, he'll do! :) I begged him for a purpley purple bulletproof ink. I'm not commissioning it--I requested it be a permanent part of his regular distribution, so everyone can enjoy it. While I would also buy a bulletproof dark maroon, I really, really want a bulletproof true purple. Of course, there still might be some disagreement as to what a "true" purple is, but at least this rules out magenta-purple, brownish-purple, reddish-purple, and pinkish-purple.

I don't really care what the label is--I'm much more interested in the ink itself. I would prefer that the label be fun and perhaps a bit edgy, but that's of minor consequence to me.

Thank you, Deirdre and kiavonne for your unwavering support! And thank you to everyone who participated in such a vigorous discussion. I think we can all agree on one thing--that we love our Noodler's! :D

I'm going to post a poll about some of the different possibilities that are on the table. You can select as many choices as you want, as long as they reflect what you'd be interested in purchasing. I don't know if/how this will affect what Nathan decides to make, but at least he'll have some more quantifiable information about what people want. If enough people would buy more than one of the possibilities, perhaps he'll decide to make multiple new bulletproof purples! :puddle:

Edit: decided not to muddy the waters by putting in maroon/dried blood/maroon-purple choices in the poll
