... but - silicone grease? What is it? Where do I get it? Is there anything around the house that will serve as a substitute - Vaseline?

Judybug, Vaseline(White petroleum jelly) or even soft candle wax rubbed on the threads will work in a pinch.

Hari

I found a small tub of silicon plumbers grease at Lowe's hardware (a big US chain for those outside the US.

There is a general warning against using vaseline or other petroleum products on pens, but I think that applies more to vintage hard rubber and celluloid. I can't imagine it would damage the acrylics used on Wality pens.

So if you have a lot of ink,

You should get a Yink, I think.

My husband brought me a little tub of silicone grease this morning from the hardware store. I've followed the instructions and filled my pens with a syringe. They both work beautifully. The nib is much smoother than I expected. I have more questions though- is the purpose of the silicone grease to just lubricate the threads or is it to keep the ink from leaking through the threads? Should the silicone grease be re-applied every time the pen is refilled?

So many pens, so little time!

The threads in the section are kept a bit loose on purpose in order to make screwing and unscrewing easier. Silicone grease will fill the gaps and prevent leakage, it is recommended over other greases for FP purpose due to its neutral nature.

You need to reapply only when you have rinsed out the pen or wiped the threads which can cause degreasing. For leak tightness, you must also ensure that you have tightened the section fully (finger tight).

Yeah, don't tell my advisor, but I'm sure we'll never use that huge tube of silicone vacuum sealant... So the little dab I 'borrowed' for my pen won't be missed.

Bob, if you're reading this, I promise to use the pen for great scientific discoveries.

Ok, I followed the instructions and applied silicone grease. Worked perfect last night. In the morning, though, it just didn't start. Someone please help.

Hi

A quick dip of the nib and feed in ink should start it right up.

Gravity is in play. So the ink will fall back into the barrel to some degree each time.
