Mont Blanc 149 vs Mont Blanc 146

What a wonderfully written review....my first ever grail pen was in fact a 149 and after I bought it I felt that I never needed another MB pen! The 149 has it all....but your review has certainly encouraged me to think about the practicality of a 146... :happyberet:

I am wondering if this is a related question: What does it mean when we say that a particular pen is the company's "flagship." The MB 149 for example, is identified as the "flagship." Also, more recently the British pen company, Onoto, categorizes it's sterling silver Magna Classic as the "flagship pen." Would it be fair to say a flagship pen "has it all?"

Thanks

DL

I have been writing with 149s B (They used to be known as MB Meisterstuck Diplomat then) since the late sixties, and the 149 (The third one) is still my daily writer, even if occasionally I write with all of my about 50 fountain pens, among which 7 other 60s and 70s Montblanc models. And, strange as it may seem to you, fellow Montblancophiles, it never entered my head to buy a 146. And I do have small hands!

146 is much better for writing...149 only for the show

Respectfuly disagree, 149 is probably too big for you or is not for you from any other reason but I am prety sure most if not all of the people on this forum who own a 149 like it as a writer and didnt buy it for show.

Going off topic just a bit, how about the Classique 145 and traveller 147? As these are of the same "Meisterstucke" family too, despite their converter ink fill system, as a writer are they in the same league as the 149 and 146? I have a 145, first MB, on it's way and just curious how the converter versions like.

The 147 is identical in size to the 146. The modern 146 is slightly heavier than the 147 due to the brass connector of its piston filler. Both are nearly identical writers IME. The 147 cannot use a converter, only carts.

I think all the MBs are fairly good writers, (if they are not, then they should go back to Mb till MB rectifies the problem correctly) it is only a question of various sizes and filling systems, MB offers this variety to suit the various customer preferences.

Very nice review indeed.

The third is indeed a MB144.

I use a Dickens, which is a 146 with a large cap, or a 149 on a daily basis. Size wise I find both very usable. As to which I prefer I couldnt truly say.

Great review, I own a number of MBs and IMHO they all have different 'characters'.

I regularly use 2 different 146s and despite both having medium nibs, they write differently!

Great comparison review. I have just received my first 146 and it is delightful to use but so is my 149!

So it looks like you dont really need to decide which one to get :)

Don't they ship to Canada? No its funny but if you are not an existing customer they cant ship it due to MB restrictions. An "existing customer" ?! I'm afraid I don't understand this one... hmm1.gifMe neither but thats what they told me.

My contribution to this older review:

As some colleagues have said, the 146 is nice, but not convincingly better than any of its competitors, while the 149 is almost a class on its own. The 146 looks big when compared to many other pens, like most Sheaffers, Parkers, etc., but next to the 149 it looks tiny, not much bigger than the 144.

But all in all the 146 is a great pen, highly recommendable IMO.

The 149 is a must for every FP enthusiast; again IMO.
