Mont Blanc 149 vs Mont Blanc 146

As I mentioned in a separate thread, my recent MB 146 (platinum finish, two-tone M nib) left me slightly disappointed, mainly because it is rhapsodized so frequently. I think the review here nicely makes the case for the virtues of these two, but speaking only about the MB146, it doesn't seem that distinctively 'better' than quite a few pens of other makes and designs. I can see myself turning to the 146 through different stretches of time in the coming years, just as a certain Pelikan or a Sailor will undoubtedly call out to me at other times.

I realize this thread focuses on comparing the two, and again, I too appreciated the review. Maybe the 'lesson' for me is NOT that I can't see the Meisterstucks to be so superlative, but that the ways pens can be appealing are so :) varied.

Thank you very much!

A fantastic comparison, and I can´t do other than agree!

Both pens are fantastic in their own way. Choosing between them is very difficult.

I bought the 149 because of its "regal" impression, it really is impressive. The fantastic nib makes all other nibs look pathetic almost.

Anyway, after having bought and used the 149 everyday for more than a year I went by my MB authorized dealer to have a chat (allways a bad idea...).

He showed me a pen that I just fell in love with the second I saw it.

I bought it there and then without even thinking twice. It was the 146 solitaire sterling silver "wedding".

It has an amazing vintage feel, and the sterling silver really looks fantastic, especially when ypu do not polish it.

The middle gold band is actually a solid gold ring that you can unscrew from the cap if you want to.

Size wise I agree that the sterling 146 gives an optical illusion of being as big as the 149.

I keep on using the 149 as a daily writer and seldom use the 146, but it really is such a jewel to handle and look at!

Now I am dreaming of the sterling silver vermeil...

MBs are such an addiction!

Best,

Rob.

What I noticed is the 149 grows on you as you use it. When I purchased a MB Meisterstuck, I opted for a 146 because, at the initial exposure to that class of MB pens, I felt it is rather big. As I get myself acclimated to a variety of fountain pens -- be them big, small, and something in between -- I started appreciating bigger pens including a 149.

Thanks for the clarification

I just received the pen I mentioned on my first post. It came in an original Mont Blanc box that as I stated before it states is a BOHEME from Paradise Pen store no 12722. However The pen is not a BOHEME. According to your discription is a MB 146. The nib is 14Kt 4810 two tone. The cap snaps on. The cap rign is engraved with "Mont Blank Meisterstuk pix" from the factory. It looks slim and light.

Can you verify that this is a MB 146?? and if so do you know the going price? I paid $270 USD. If I return it can I get a betterpen/deal elsewhere?? your feedback is welcome

Thanks

It is NOT a 146. It may be a Montblanc 144, a small thin cartridge/converter model.

Here is a family picture. From left to right:149, 146, 144, then four older Montblancs.

It might also be a Mozart but it is NOT a 146.

Definitely not a 146. 146s have screw caps, and aren't what I would call slim.

This review was exactly what I was looking for in my quest of whether I want a 146 or 149. Unfortunately, the answer is clear - both. I will start with the 149 and save for the 146 later. Maybe by the Columbus Pen show I will be ready.

Glad I could be of help.

I had both, sold them, bought them again then sold the 146 and now I am only with the 149 but not for long.

I am sure to get the 146 sooner or later again.

For those of you that own both the 146 and 149, do you find it awkward to switch back and forth between the pens due to the longer nib of the 149. I have an M600 and M800 and find the 600 great for quick notes and printing, but find the 800 best for cursive and correspondence, but not finding one ideal for everything. How are you 146 / 149 owners using your pens, or did you eventually decided to use one exclusively and store the other in the drawer?

I have 2 of each, and I always have a 146 and 149 inked. Both feel comfortable in my (medium size) hands; I choose them depending on my mood.

I think your experience with the 600 and 800 would fit my own with the 146 and 149, but the 146 is comparable in size to the 800. The 149 feels considerably larger than the 800.

I have been given a beautiful 1980s (I think) Burgundy 146 as a gift from a fellow FPNer and I love it. I have very small hands, and although I've never written with a 149, I've handled them at a pen show, and they seem too big for me. I also have the diminutive 144, which I adore, its so slim and very cute, great for when you are on the run, but all-in-all I think I prefer my 146.

Pens are like chicks...........Go for the one with the large nibs!

Hmm, not sure what Pelikan would think of that! :hmm1:

 :roflmho:

I am sure they would rather you think of "chicks" then "snowflakes" when you consider what pen to buy!

This has been a great review to read! I have not tried the 149 yet, but from what I can tell from the 146, it will be the pefect pen for me. The 146 is a great pen though, if I had not tried it I would not have tried Mont blanc! :yikes:

What a wonderfully written review....my first ever grail pen was in fact a 149 and after I bought it I felt that I never needed another MB pen! The 149 has it all....but your review has certainly encouraged me to think about the practicality of a 146... :happyberet:
