Schmidt pen parts question

:) Impatience and a bias for action are qualities that are virtually indistinguishable! One is desirable, and the other, not so much.

I will order some additional units, KFH300 and KFH400, in case anyone wants more, or finds the thread late. That will also divide up the shipping among more units, resulting in lower cost per unit.

If you can keep pursuing more information, that would be good. I don't want to be limited to medium steel nibs! I'd be really interested to see what other people have done with the same parts!

I really want to know for certain if the Levenger pens nib units are Schmidt, and if they fit the KFH300 piston unit, or if they fit the Filcao Columbia. Looks like I need to be the guinea pig!

George---Let me know when they come in, I will probably want at least one of the larger units.

Here is a link to the thread I saw about the Taccia/Schmidt connection. Check out post #https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=62219&hl=schmidt

This is a link to a Schmidt search in the writing instrument forum----lots of stuff to look at!

Looks like Bexley is using Schmidt nibs, would be interesting to see if they are using the piston fill units too, but I don't know how forthcoming they would be if asked.

They're here! I'm having computer issues right now, and will post some pics of the piston pen innards when I get them sorted out. The kits look identical, just the nib units have different sized nibs in them. They seem to be typical Schmidt medium steel nibs, very smooth. I did some checking, and the large nibs are the same as the Retro 51 nibs, if you want to swap them out for others (I think they can be had for $15+ shipping from Moleskines.com in F, M, and B widths)

I have reserved the following:

DanF - 2 large nib version

APPLEMAN - 2 small nib version

OldGriz - 2 small nib version

Fountainbel - 2 large nib version - CONFIRMED

Penturner - 1 small nib, 1 large - CONFIRMED

scogre - 1 large, 1 small - CONFIRMED

and have additional units for those that want to upsize the nibs or weren't included in the original offering.

Small nib: 7

Large nib: 1

Since I'm not in this to make money, I'll do this at cost.

Small nib version 12.50 Euro = $20

Large nib version 14 Euro = $22.50

Shipping and money sending fees to get it to me from Germany = $3 per pen

+ whatever it costs to ship it to you ( depends a lot on the insurance, packing options, where you are, etc.)

Current stock has dwindled! All of the spare large nib versions are spoken for, and I've only got small nibbed versions left right now (~5)

Still waiting on confirmation from DanF and OldGriz. Please PM me when you get time.

George,

Was there any technical info included in the package about the thread sizes on the kit?

I never guess. It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.

No, but the salesman did send me a schematic, and it had all the dimensions, thread sizes, etc.

I posted it as a pdf in an earlier message, above. The KFH 300 <blah blah blah> .pdf file at the top of page 2.

Near as I can tell, the unit is meant to screw into a barrel and a section, and the cap is to be secured to the section, not the piston unit itself. They come with little plastic caps that fit over the nib, but I don't think they're necessary if your cap has a good seal. The threads are oddball sizes. 10x0.5 and 10.2 by 0.5 IIRC, and I was told that I should have the barrel/section CNC machined to match them, as a tap/die is hard to match to these sizes.

I was planning on drilling out a section and barrel, and just gluing them to the piston unit, it isn't like I'm going to be servicing them. The nib units screw out from the pen, as I've mentioned before, so they can be serviced/replaced if needed.

Thanks for the information, the threads are weird indeed. 10x0.5 is available on the market, but 10.2x0.5 is a custom size.

Anyway, we are looking forward to see the first pens with these kits.

I guess I'm a little late, how did the pens turn out? Are there any piston units left?

I've made a few pens, but haven't been happy with the "kit" quality, specifically for the fountains.

I haven't seen any finished pens yet, but I'm sure something interesting will come of this.

I have several of the smaller units left, if you're interested. PM me if you want some!

Does anyone have one of the larger piston assemblies they'd part with?

Thanks
