How to Identify Sheaffer Pens 1940's & 1950's

I have several Sheaffer pens that were manufactured in the 1940's and '50's. My problem is that they look so similar that I am having trouble identifying them, even with the help of several good and well illustrated pen references. Is there anywhere a reference that will help me discern the difference between the several models Sheaffer produced from about 1942 through the mid to late 1950's?

Thanks!

I would look at the reference area of Richard Binder'ssite at richardspens.com and/or the gallery area of penhero.com You may find what you are looking for at one of these very informative sites.

Sheaffer didn't have date codes on their pens, but generally speaking, the triumph nibs were introduced in the early 40's. These could be either vacuum or lever filled. Thinline (touchdowns) were introduced in '49, and snorkles in '52. Jeff

Not wanting to be contrary, but wasn't there a year of chubby Touchdowns, with the TM body showing up in 1950?

Well, I happen to have a chubby one (Wait, that sounds bad....)

Yes, Sheaffer did have some thick body touchdowns both with traditional nibs and triumph nibs. I have one of each on my desk.

This is a really FAQ like this about Sheaffers. Don't you all think it would be a great idea to have a pinned picture gallery attached to this forum?

Penhero.com is one of the best sources - PenGallery: Sheaffer Main Page And Penography

Also, Jim Mamoulides was running a series in the Pennant about the Sheaffers of this era, including extensive catalog prints. It is worth a look.

So if you have a lot of ink,

You should get a Yink, I think.

Well, you could buy one of each, line them up and compare them ;)
