In my experience, I always prefer to post the pens. And I have a notion that posting was expected by most vintage makers:

a) most vintage pens I have are rather small (e.g., Esterbrooks, Pelikan 100) when uncapped; when posted they go up to "normal" size.

b ) desk pens and calligraphy pens have always had long tapering bodies; that means it is (or was) felt that a longer body was needed to balance the pen. Short unposted pens are unbalanced, because most of the pen´s weight is rests at the tip of the fingers, not on the web of the hand.

c) in most (or all?) contemporary advertisements of vintage pens I´ve seen, they were shown posted.

Of course, modern pens tend to be bigger and heavier, and to have precious finishes we don´t want to risk... so un-posting has become the norm :)

this is my pseudo-historical interpretation of posting, worth about 2 cents...
