I use my pens mostly unposted, with a the few exceptions of those too small for my big sloppy hands (Pelikan M200 and Esterbrook Purse) and my gorgeous Dani Trio Brilliante, that has is designed to be posted: it has screws on both ends, and the balance is perfect when posted.

I often post if the pen can accomodate it and the posting is not very likely to damage the finish, like with my Waterman Carene, Taccia Doric, Pelikan Chicago, or Sailor 1911 PG. Some pens are specifically designed for it, like the Bexley Tuck-Away and Danitrio Brilliante. Still, there are some pens I would never post, like my urushi Danitrio Densho. The finish is just too gorgeous to risk marring it.

I could not post because my hands are too small, and the pen never balances properly--even the Japanese pocket pens.

 

The nib end always goes up to the heavens and the barrel end hits the ground.

Small enough that it goes up to the rubber plunger in the M200, but no further. I always hold my pen in italic calligraphy position--45 degrees to the paper, and 45 degrees in relation to the line.

Small enough so that my thumb is bigger... Hand goes up to the piston knob of the M200.

I didn't vote, because it depends a lot on the pen. Most of the time these days it is unposted, because I write mostly with bigger pens, and it feels more comfortably to me now.

 

However, when I rediscovered fountain pens about 2 1/2 years ago, I posted all the time. I needed the extra weight, because of all the abuse my hand had gotten from using BPs and the like . Since about a year I never post, unless the pen is small.

I just put the cap on the side of the table and write... This is mainly for me not to accomodate to do it. I don't want my next "good" (read better than my Rotring and Senator) pens to have their barrel laquer marked.

I only post ONE pen. My Online Starter. I have a habit of holding the cap and playing with it. Recently though, I put it on the side of the table. My hands are icky and sweaty...

If the post caps, I post them! For two reasons:

 

a.) So's I don't lose it on my cluttered desk, and

 

2.) The weight on the back end makes it feel sooo much better...

If you have a 50s Duofold, hold it posted and the unposted and really look at it. I contend that unposted it is a thing of beauty, but posted it's an ugly beast.

With a Rotring 600, unposted. Posted, the pen seems very "top-heavy" and it's inclined to waver a bit in its contact with the first (hand) joint of the index finger. I wonder -- is this common for a 600-series?

I bought a '600' on closeout recently and was impressed with it, but until I figured out that you have to sort of push and twist the cap on mine to seat it on the back of the barrel (maybe this is just with my pen), I found the wobby cap a bit disconcerting...

 

Generally, I post the caps on my modern pens unless I think the cap will scratch the barrel. With vintage, I sometimes post, but sometimes I don't, depending on the thinness of the cap material. Just my personal choice.

That is to keep the shape aligned. If you notice it is always aligned. You can't put the cap on wrong on that pen.

 

I generally post but most of mine are lighter Rotrings that have a snap when posted. So it is designed to be posted. When I save enough for a 146 or a 149 it won't be posted at all.

 

I don't write with the 600 much lately as it is actually my wifes and even though her 600 pen and FP set live in my Pen Hotel I just keep them warm for her. So I don't write a bunch with it. I could see what you mean about the extra weight. It could get tedious. If I ever use the 600 on a regular basis I probaly wouldn't post it.
