Your most reliable workhorse...

Hi all,

A quick question. What is your most reliable daily workhorse? And while we're at it, what's the LEAST reliable pen you own?

My most reliable: Lamy Studio, Pilot VP.

Least reliable: Parker Sonnet (I've had several).

Bernie.

Most: Parker "51"

Least (that I still own and didn't sell off because they were unreliable): Bexley

Most reliable work horse is my Omas Paragon-its both my best writer and the most reliable pen.

Most unreliable pen ? I had few but I huess the Parker Sonnet was one that never did what it was suppose to do.

Most reliable: Parker 51. Others are just as good, but the "51" has never failed.

Least reliable: Majestic. When they are good, they are pretty good (and have character to boot), but they develop wild hairs and go crazy sometimes, too... Pulsing, drying and blobbing simultaneously, etc.

That's what you get with vintage 3rd tier pens.

To be honest, I can't pen (arg! pin!) it down. I use pens and require them to be reliable else they sit in a box. If they sit in a box long enough, they get sold.

The pens that are always in my rotation: Pelikans, Sailors, Namikis

If they aren't reliable, they aren't workhorses obviously but I know you didn't mean that. I suspect you meant, as far as non-pocket jewelry pens go, which pen is your least reliable. Um...

Refer to first paragraph. I have a couple of pens I don't use a lot because they aren't as comfy, but not because of reliability issues.

Most reliable: Stipula Ventidue with the Titanium nib. Today, it's in between the Ancora Perla and Visconti Metropolis in today's rotation case.

Least reliable: I have another Ti-nibbed Stipula (okay, I have five or six in all), and this one's got the dreaded Ti-feed problem, so it's out for repair.

A quick question. What is your most reliable daily workhorse? And while we're at it, what's the LEAST reliable pen you own?

Most Reliable: Either Pelikan. M600 just because it's slightly more comfortable.

Least Reliable: Libelle Epic. I really like this pen, but its converter is a pain in the heiny.

Most reliable: Tie between Parker 51 and Pelikan 400NN. Both started after weeks on non-use, and always flowed impeccably.

Least: Montblanc 146 until I recently had a regrind by Richard Binder. NOW it's reliable!

Least - various modern pens, the worst being a Stipula

Best - any number of vintage pens, but none more so than various German piston fillers from the 30s-50s (no, I'm not going to single one out); among modern pens, just about any made in Japan.

At the present time, all my pens are reliable. If any of them become unreliable, I work on them until they either become reliable again or they go into the parts box.

For me, I have two classes of my personal pens.

1) The super-special pens that stay in a case up on the top shelf of my office. I use these pens for signatures, and special notes, etc.

2) A pen that I don't mind my 2-year old grabbing.

In case #1, my best most reliable is a Herald of my own design made from Casein. I've only been able to secure 10 inches of casein, which is only enough to make one pen. I made this Herald, and put on a nib that I customized to a .7mm stub with a leeeetle bit of flex.

In case #2, it's any of three Lamy Safaris. I love those pens. They are great. Most of the time, they require a little smoothing, but generally, not only is the pen design wonderful, but so are the nibs.

Thankfully, the vast majority of my 10-12 pens are hyper-reliable, all of them having come from, or made a trip to, one of our myriad nibmeisters. The only exception at this point is my Delta Moresi, which I've fitted with a lovely Montegrappa (Bock) OM that suffers from, what else?, a hint of baby bottom. It too will soon be making a trip to Greg Minuskin. My Waterman Carène was perfect out of the box and is my everyday carry.

Regards,

David

My most reliable workhorse pens are my Lamy Studio, Pelikan M805, and Montblanc 146 LeGrand.

My least reliable pen is my Sheaffer Snorkel. I love it when it works, but its reliability is hit and miss.

Most reliable: Lamy Studio

Least reliable: Hero 331 (It's the only one I've had to shake to get it started again when it's nearing empty)

Most reliable...Hmm....I'd say nearly all of them.

Least reliable is my Parker '51'. Having nib problems with it. I think buying a hooded-nib FP was a mistake, now! I keep screwing up when I try to find the sweet spot...

Most reliable: Lamy Safari (I have a Pelikan M150 that has been just as reliable, but I don't put it through the same kind of abuse)

Least reliable: Parker Sonnet - I have had this in for nib replacement and now it writes (crucial for a pen, no?) but it's like pushing chalk across a blackboard (makes the same sound too). It's a beautiful and expensive pen yet I can't stand to write with it.
