Platinum PGB 3000

Never tried a product of this manufacturer, but noticed that a webshop (Ujuku) sells lower end Platinum fountain pens. One of them is the Platinum PGB 3000. Is the Platinum PGB 3000 a good pen? Is it a good alternative for pens from Pilot (like the 78G, Prera or Knight).

Thanks for pointing out another inexpensive pen to try out!

I have a couple of Platinum Preppy pens (three dollars apiece).

The nibs are quite smooth.

I don't care for the Platinum black ink. It is too gray for me.

But it is a pretty smooth writing ink though.

Hello there,

Platinum pens usually cost less than their well known Japanese counterparts; Pilot and Sailor. But that doesn't mean their quality is lessened at all though. Nakaya hand crafted pens are probably some of the best Maki-e pens in the world, and the masters who deliver this art are former employees for Platinum. So if you are comparing the PGB 3000 to the Pilots, I don't think you will be disappointed at all.

Most of the Platinums, unlike the Preppy pens, come with 14K gold nibs, which provide excellent smoothness and durability. I like the Prera and the 78G because Pilot's Super Quality Steel nibs usually give great tracking and you never feel you are scratching the paper. If you are in the market for Platinum pens such as the PGB 3000, there might be some sites for you to check out. Exploring is half the fun anyway!

Take Care,

Sounds like I have to order one. What is interesting is that there are quite a lot of really cheap (and likely very good) Japanese pens that seems to be almost unnoticed here on FPN. Not many seem to know the Platinum PGB 3000. Also interesting cheap Japanese fp's are in my opinion the Sailor Recruit, Sailor High Ace, Pilot Cavalier, Pilot New Young Rex or the Platinum PTL 3000.

Platinums are not covered as much as Pilot/Namiki or Sailor, that's true. But sometimes you can find some diamonds in the rough. Personally, I like a lot of the Japanese pens because the prices are a lot less expensive than their American and European counterparts for equal quality and reliability.

It wouldn't hurt to search FPN here to find out more about them since past posts usually are buried quickly with new ones.

Hope that helps a bit. :)
