Letter Opener

Judybug makes a good point about having one sharp enough to actually open a letter. I have a very pretty hand hammered copper one that I bought from

one of the native american craftsmen down on the plaza. When I got it home i found it wasn't sharp enough to open a letter! So at some point I need

to find someone with a grinding wheel who could actually put something of an edge on it.

I use a letter opener only for actual letters. It's pictured in my avatar sitting on the journal - not that sharp, but works for sliding under the flap of an envelope to gently work apart the glue. It has a nice weight and feel to it.

If the envelope is taped, forget it, and bills just get ripped!

I have two that I use.

The bottom one is from my Grandfather's desk and it's

so functional.

The letter opener proper edge isn't sharp at all so I

ended up most often using the blade side, which

sort of defeated the purpose of the letter opener side.

I decided some time ago that it really wasn't "girly" enough

for a place at my "desk," so I bought the top one - a

TJ Maxx reduced special - I think I may have paid 5.00

for it.

It's worth 5.00 for the decorative function and that's it.

The flowers are pretty.

If I have pants with pockets on, I use my Buck.

(we won't discuss how well that goes with my girly image)

Any others here use any letter openers?

I have some letter openers made of wood by my father, but I do not use them. I use just Opinel knife No. 2.

I use a letter opener that was a gift from a friend - he got it from a missionary trip to Uganda about 5 years ago. It's wood, and it's warped a little, but I love it, it's a great grip, even though it may not look like it. Other than that, I just rip em open

Wow.I feel backward. I use a finger or a coupon cutter made from plastic. Now I have an excuse to go letter opener (pen) hunting!

I use mine often. It's brass with a treble clef on the end. My husband's, which he uses, too, is made the same as mine but has a little Celtic figure instead of a treble clef.

Pocket knife.

Sometimes a technology reaches perfection and further development is just tinkering. The fountain pen is a good example of this.
