They are no longer available.... I have searched high and low without luck....

I have one LL pencil that still writes.. and let me tell you ... there was a reason these did not survive....

I'm curious Griz, is it feasible to convert to a [mumble] ballpoint?

Richard.

Not that I know of.... there is no mechanism on a LL pencil...

But it could be kept permanently open in some sort of desk pen holder... The question is why would someone want to do that.

Because it seems a waste to have P51/61 bits sitting idle. They are too good to be wasted by not being used.

Good point.

Actually, I have absolutely no idea how the LL refill looks like, so hard to say if it's possible.

actually, you can put a generic ballpoint refill in them (the stick type). I have a really, really nice Parker 51 Liquid Lead pencil that has since been converted to a nice, usable ballpoint. Yes, the tip is open and yes, you do run the risk of getting ink on stuff. I carry it around in a case with the matching P51 fountain pen and its a great pair.

I would buy up all the LL pencils I could, if I could get them for a few dollars each.

Hi Chris .. Thanks for the info and efforts but I think I don't see a point in converting LL pen to a Ballpoint Pen with an open tip unless you are seeking only the usage purpose .. this is not the case with me.. I enjoy using every and each pen in my collecton for its purpose.. Ballpoint pen - for me - is a ballpoint pen and LL pen should remian LL pen.. anyhow, many thanks for the info :) ASL.

Well, I have to admit my secret dream is having a set of 51 Flighter - meaning FP and LL in working condition. However as of now I'm not anywhere near and ordinary 51, not talking about a Flighter...and LL is just a dream and nothing else.

What about a Flighter mechanical pencil? They need homes too.

ASL, someone had some LL refills for sale (for a hefty premium) awhile back. It may have been Pendemonium, but don't hold me to that as it could have been one of the restorers/resellers. Whoever it was, they indicated that the refills were sold as a collectors' item only, as they rarely, if ever, work (even unused, NOS refills) after this much time.

You're pretty much out of luck if BP is out of the question, but if you really want to try, they do come up from time to time, but expect to pay heavily for a LL refill that may/may not work.

THey *are* still available on a couple of sites. I can't remember where, but they are. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned, they're extremely expensive, since they're not manufactured any more. If I accidently stumble over the site that had them for sale, I'll post it here...

Hi Kingjoe.. Many thanks for your kind input.. I have seen the ones you are talking about.. they are there but it is clearly mentioned they are not in a wroking ored ( they are dry) .. I collect pens but at the same time I wish to use them too.. thus - as you said below - I am not willing to pay heavily unless I am sure that the LL works.. cheers and best regards ..ASL

I seem to recall that PaperMate (may have been pre Newall Rubbermaid) made a stick pen with the graphite paste ball point for a while. AIR, I tried one and it was satisfactory but I could never see the advantage of it over a mechanical pencil. For me, I use a pencil because it can be erased and ink because it isn't, I did not need another choice.

I think it was rejected by the consumer not because it was a bad product, but because there was simply no need for it.

YMMV

Hi Todd.. not defending the LL but as a metter of fact I used both (LL / Pencil ) and I see differences at least as far as the Parker 51 LL & pencil .. the weight of the pen is different, the nib is very different.. many differences are there.. I understand your pojnt of view but still I need to find LL for my parker ! :)

So just to check if I had a working LL I tried the first 10 I found in the Parker box. None work. I don't recall ever seeing one that wrote well but I have seen a few that write a faint line. Perhaps I'll cut open an old cartridge and see what is in there.

Does anyone know what the carrier for the graphite was in the Parker formulation?
