Interesting pen thanks for the review wink.gif

Do you know if the level 5 is available with a bold nib?

Yes: F, M, B. smile.gif

I've been thinking about buying one of these for 10 years, never had the nerve too. Maybe seeing the positive reviews here will balance me, and finally get me on the level.

I really like mine, Steppen. Don't be worried about the fill mechanism. The blue Level ink is not the prettiest, but it is easy to put other inks in the fill bottle. Now that I know to push on the bottom of the bottle as you are filling, putting ink in is always very easy and clean. The main thing I don't like about the pen is that it can't post, so I have to be careful with my cap. I love the very visible ink chamber and the writing quality. I have an F and I like it - a very true fine, almost a Japanese fine but not quite. Great FP, a shame they did not catch on.

An excellent and informative review which led me to buying one just now. Could you refrain from any more reviews until I have some spare money in my account please!!

Andy,

You have caught the disease, a couple of weeks ago you were asking about Pelikans, you now own how many? I have now worked out your ebay ID (incidently it was me you sniped on the 800 nib, but I bought an EF one instead, I wanted a spare but decided why have the same nib, so thanks for outbidding).

I have a Level 5, after I eventually filled it it lasted a long time between refills and writes well with a fairly stiff nib, I even bought the cheaper Level 1, but haven't got round to filling that yet.

Now you have got the modern ones out of the way, you can start on vintage pens, the old 400NNs are pretty good as are the 140s.

Are you trying to embarass me

I have bought or have had bought for me a P1, M805, M605, M200 "special", M200 Citroenpers x 2, Level 5 and an 800 nib. In my defence I sold one of the 200s and gave a Citroenpers away. The nib doesn't count, the 605 was bought for me and I bought the P1 by accident, so I think that makes two!

The nib that came with my 805 was too fine for me so I was glad that I sniped the nib from underneath you. It showed me how good the nib sould be. It's a spare though. I still can't understand why anyone would want to use an EF though. It would be fine for flossing :roflmho:

I still haven't come across the Level 1. I am not sure that I am going to use the Level 5 as it has a fine nib.

I have seen a couple of interesting ones so I might chance my arm on one.

Hi Shaun,

The pen looks great, filling system is a little hard and messy, and finally dry writing pens not for me  I think all the Pelikan except M series are dry writers.

Take Care

Emrecan

I have a Pelikan M100 EF and an M200 F, and a Grand Prix M. All three are very wet writers, even the Grand Prix. Don't know about any others, though.

The M100 I have has a factory EF, and it is as broad as the M on the Phileas I just sold, as is the Binder F on the M200 I have. I have some Chinese pens marked F which would serve for dental floss if they were a little broader, but the Pelikans I have in the EF, F & M range are not even in the same territory as even a Phileas F.

  • 10 years later...

Even though this thread has been idle for over 10 years, I wish to add a couple of comments.

I really enjoyed the pen while I was using it, but after 8 years without use I was unable to revive it, because it was too difficult to flush before putting it away.

My two complaints about the Level 5 are:

1. Cleaning the pen is too complicated. No other pen offers that much difficulty for flushing the ink out of the pen.

2. The cap has a very good spring loaded clip, but it cannot be posted. While I was using it I ended up using it as a desk pen. If you are out and about and carry the pen in your pocket, you should be able to post it or risk the possibility of losing or damaging the cap.

I think these are major design flaws that overshadow the merits this pen may have.

Victor.

Before I opened the thread I thought it was going to be all about Pelikan fanatics buying Pelikan branded bedclothes and cars with "Go Pelikan!" go faster stripes and such like

Well... I am actually very fond of Pelikan pens.

In my collection I have a 100, 100N, 400, 400NN, P1, M1000 and matching pencils and ballpoints where aplicable. Colani BP and pencil and even a Nº 60 pencil.

Those are all with outstanding design features, very enjoyable pens.

My only disappointment was the level 5 fountain pen and only for those two reasons. If I were to commit myself to only use that pen without switching to other pens from time to time I would enjoy using it as a desk pen.

After reading the new posts on this thread I have forgotten about my pelican level. I will try to load it tomorrow.
