This is a very remarkable article! I like it. Now, I can date my pens.

Somebody interested in differences in construction and design between a MB 149 from the 1979'ies and one of the 1980'ies? Have a look at this pictures.

The main difference is construction and design of the sections. Both of them have hardrubber feeds and black plastic threads under the piston cone:

Thanks for the pics Christof!

Kinda cool to seem them disassembled like that for those of us not mechanically inclined or have the cajones to do it. Noticed that both pens had the piston rod snapped off from the cone..ouch. That happened to me but a kind person here fixed me up.

Welcome by the way :W2FPN:

I just purchased a 149 as my first non-disposable fountain pen. I am so excited to get it and this article just makes me want it even more. I am reading about flex and all the cool ways to use it and the nib on the pen I got is the fine 14c two toned version mentioned in the article, so now I'm even more excited to try it out. Now to just find a good ink... but that's for another thread, anyways. Awesome article!!!

Thank you everyone! What an informative and educational article - or may I say e-book?

I've filed all of it for my personal use and education.

I have one 149 that I bought from a boutique in Wales in 1994 - but have no idea what age it really is - it has an 18k nib, small snowflake, striped ink-view window - so I'm guessing that it's a 1990s model - right?

At the time I was impressed with how patient MB was with my nib selection - the pen travelled back and fore between Cornwall where I lived, and London many times. In the end Richard Binder made it the sweetest cursive italic - after I discovered the cyberworld of pens! Right now it is filled with Diamine Grey ink - and in use daily.

I have a couple of vintage MBs - a lovely #30 button filler with incredible flex - and a grey striated 642 with flex italic fine nib. Also a 1950s 144 with OBB and a 1970s 146 with a B nib. There are also a few WEs - but we won't get into those here today.

I'm a dedicated MB fan!

Each day is the start of the rest of your life!

Make it count!!!

I really enjoyed this article - even sent copies to some of my friends who do not understand my relationship to MB fountain pens.

On a very long list of stupid things that I have done, at or near the top was selling the one and only 149 that I have ever owned. I didn't start collecting fountain pens until a few years later, and only then did I fully realize what a wonderful pen I had.

I used to be able to open to Barry's great article, but can't see to get the link to work now.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Time will say nothing but I told you so.
