I thought I should add that this was written with my Montblanc 149 with custom cursive italic nib. (Strange, after using the Mikado for the last week, the MB 149 seemed a little small in my hand!)

please also give a report of how you got the ink & smell out of your pen I put love letter in one of mine and it took months for the smell to leave the cap even after repeat washings.

That's what I'm hoping since I do like some of the other MB special colors I am just scent shy at this point

Thanks for the excellent review, Bryan. I was recently very disappointed by the MB Sepia (only because I suspect - but can't prove, of course - that it's Herbin Terre de Feu in a different bottle), but this one is much more interesting. I'll look out for it.

No 'shoe shaped' bottles. The bottle reminds me of Namiki ink bottles.

Had the hardest time opening my bottle of this ink yesterday. Beautiful color, but I absolutely hate the smell of this licorice ink. I can't bear smelling it. It feels like a waste to pour it out, but I also don't want to sell it because I LOVE the cute little bottle it comes with.

All this talk of MB Season's Greetings reminded me that I bought a bottle of the stuff in July. Right time of year to use it--so I tried it tonight in one of my trusty "test" pens, a Hero 100. The pen totally refused to work.

 

So I dug out an Esterbrook, screwed in a 9556 nib, and filled it. The ink is not as wet as normal for this pen/nib. Minor feathering in a Moleskine. Dries quickly like other MB inks I have used. Nice medium to dark brown color. Real brown without any red.

 

Now, about that smell. Interesting at first. A bit perfume-like. I could not recognize any "cookies nor spices" that I knew. Betty says "licorice" and that is more accurate. After a while my reaction to the smell was, "Okay, I get it...now you can stop." So now I'm in another part of the house and I can still faintly smell it.

 

Aargh! Season's Greetings, indeed!

To answer the question above, Waterman Havana looks darker to me than this ink.

 

I also have to second that it has only a 'vaguely perfumey' smell. Of course, between non-stop allergies and years around nasty chemicals, I'd probably have to shove cookies in one nostril and spices up the other to discern that scent.

 

I've never had any problem getting this ink, or any other to work in my pens. I do love the big nibbed fire hoses though so perhaps they're more forgiving?
