What pen are you waiting for in the mail?

That is a beautiful pen! Very eye-catching!

Thanks. I'm rather taken with it myself. Almost to the point of not wanting to put my grubby paw-prints on it. It's my first modern ebonite pen, and I'm somewhat concerned about goofing it up, through lack of experience. (I've had a chased hard rubber Conklin Crescent Filler from the teens of the last century for some time. Hard rubber is, essentially the same thing (if I understand correctly)--but because of the age I've been reluctant to handle that one, too.)

It's quite a large pen, yes? The nib is lovely. Can it be posted and will you do so? What kind of filling system does it have?

It is fairly good sized, true: approximately 6" capped; posted, so the specs say, close to 7". Half an inch in diameter. For me, a very good fit. It can be posted, but I won't likely post mine: I'm not much one to post my caps. Filling system is cartridge/converter--comes with a standard international converter installed, and, I'm pretty sure, can be converted to eyedropper fill--but don't quote me on that one. :) I plan to use the converter, once I get my nerve up.

You did a nice job with the photos! Now, I want to know about the books in the second photo.

Thanks again. I got lucky. I just kept snapping pics hoping one or two would turn out.

As to those books...

I've been a book accumulator since long before I caught the fountain pen bug. Those are part of the accumulation.

Working left to right, there are a few books that were shelved under "Current Events" where, and when, I acquired them, political stuff and foreign affairs; next to those is where my Tolkien section transitions in to my biographies section: Ruth S. Noel's The Languages of Middle-earth and Tom Shippey's The Road to Middle-earth and J. R. R. Tolkien: Author of the Century give way to Humphrey Carpenter's books on Tolkien and the Inklings, then there's John Garth's Tolkien and the Great War; then the more general biographies start: among other books, volumes on Cleopatra, David Brinkley, Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke and Joseph Conrad. (Yep, it's in need of some reorganizing: Entropy's been in the saddle too long.) Bios continue at the right margin of the photo, English political bios (Thatcher, Churchill) giving way to Romans (Caesar, Cicero, Marcus Aurelius--the usual suspects), and that shelf ends up with science biography (Einstein, Galileo, Newton, Tesla).

Or, in short, it's the lower center of the non-fiction wall. :)

Just ordered a Monteverde Tool Pen in Yellow. Ordered it from Massdrop.com, with a maximum price of $37.99, which could drop if more people buy it.

I really hope that I haven't just purchased a lump of junk, but I took a chance on a Jinhao X450 for the princely sum of €4 with free postage and packaging. I don't understand how they can actually do this; surely it costs more to post it to me?!!

I'm also waiting on a Waterman Ideal with flex nib that I probably overpaid for - but I just couldn't resist it. Looking forward to getting it.

My Jinhao is my favorite writer and the best looking pen I own. Granted, I don't play with the high rollers, but you will be pleased with your Jinhao!

Thank you for the detailed explanations. I hope you use your new pen often as it is too beautiful to sit in a drawer. You know, I was researching the durability of ebonite and I discovered that some bowling balls are made from it. So, if one can bowl with a large ball of ebonite, you can certainly hold an ebonite pen, write with it and not worry about it being damaged. ;)

You have some nice books in your collection. How is that Joseph Conrad bio?

Lamy 2000 with an OM nib from some ebay seller. Figured I'd get a proper fountain pen and ordered that without looking too much into it. Pretty much only knew the Lamy 2000 was highly recommended. Turns out the letters "OM" actually meant something. Christ, I hope I end up liking it but think an EF would have suited me more now when I have read up on it a bit.

You can send it in to Lamy to get the nib switched out to one of your liking. If you are in the States, it'll probably cost you like $20? At least that's the quote I got when I emailed them a week ago (I had my eye on a 2000 on ebay but ultimately decided my funds would be better spent elsewhere).

I doubt I'll have a warranty as it was purchased via ebay, ended up buying an EF as well and will just give the other one as a gift (parents birthdays coming up soon).

Yesterday I was successful in an eBay auction for a 2009 Montblanc 146 Unicef - Signiture for Good. It's coming from Rome so I don't expect it to arrive for a couple weeks but boy am I looking forward to seeing it!

Still waiting on the ink cartridges I bought on Ebay so I can finally try out my Jinhao X450 I got on Monday. The first package got "lost in the mail", so they are re-sending it by FedEx. Of course the sudden snowstorm that we had here in the South has delayed all sorts of deliveries. :(

Got my VP! :-) What I wasn't expecting was a completely used red cartridge inside. I know I bought the pen used on Amazon, but I don't know, I guess I just wasn't expecting it to be that used. Otherwise it's in great shape, and after spending 30 minutes cleaning out all the dried up red ink (and possibly staining a white sink...) it's working perfectly. Worth every penny.

I'm currently waiting on two trade! Neither of which done through the classifieds here though. The first is a Namiki Falcon fine - which I may be getting scammed out of but only time will tell. And a Parker 45 prototype that I'm very excited about. Not specifically a pen but I'm also waiting for a "leather" 3 pen case that I ordered off of the bay.

Just made my first order with the Goulet Pen Company, waiting now for a Noodler's Ahab Flex (Medieval Lapis) and a TWISBI Vac 700. I also ordered a selection of notebooks, a couple of Noodler's inks and a pen case.

Regards,

Kevin
