Fountain Pens in Singapore

Just as I suspected. My friend plans on ordering a large supply of Triomphe stationery to take back home with her. It's excellent paper.

Hi Ronnie,

You might also convey to her that if she was to drop by Kinokuniya, they do have stock up on two kinds of letter pads from Midori meant for fountain pens. I keep meaning to do a review but never got down to it. They cost roughly about $9-$11 SG per pad. And Paperchase 100 GSM laid paper/parchment paper can be found at borders.

I dropped by Kinokuniya in Takashimaya a couple of days ago and picked up a Mnemosyne notebook from Maruman for 8.65 SGD. The paper quality was very smooth and absorbed ink very well without any bleeding at all i.e Sailor Kiwaguro ink. I saw some Rhodia black & yellow A4 notepads for sale as well, if that is of interest to anyone.

Mustafa would probably be the cheapest place to get it, as their prices are around 20-40% lower than elsewhere. No trying, but you can dry-write on a piece of paper. If it glides un-inked, it'll be even better inked. Alternatively, you can try the pen/watch shop behind Fook Hing at Bras Basah.

By the way, the Pilot 'Tank' pen is only the ED-fill one; the squeeze filler one is called the Pilot Superior.

Looking to exchange ink samples! Available: Noodler's Bulletproof Black, Noodler's 54th Massachusetts, Noodler's Black Swan in English Roses, Noodler's Bad Belted Kingfisher, Noodler's Operation Overlord Orange

Grace have you bought anything from that shop behind Fook Hing before ?

I only bought a Pelikan M650 from them before at fixed discounted price.

Most of the pens have little tags with their own secret codes.

And the shop is always so packed with people buyig watches, alarm clocks , calculators etc.

But from what I obsered there is always bargaining going on for all the transections.

Hello. I am unsure if the shop you mentioned is the same as the one on my mind.

If it is the same, then I myself have bought most of my fountain pens & watches from them.

I usually go to Bras Basah on weekdays, so its usually empty, but I think we should be talking about the same shop. Directly behind Fook Hing, and about twice as large, right? I have only purchased some inexpensive items though; a Parker 45 and a Pelikan converter. I didn't really bargain, but the uncle offered me a discount on the tag price.

Hard to compare.

Mustafa's price is fixed.

Fook Hing put a price tag on their pens but will offer you a 15% discount. May be more if you bargain.

The shop behing Fook Hing did not tag price on their pens but should be cheaper than Fook Hing after bargaining.

For those new to fountain pens in Singapore, I would avoid shops without price tags. You started out with a disadvantage if you don't know about the pen you are buying. I thought I had a bargain when I bought what I thought was Conklin's Mark Twain. Turn out to be cheap Gliders. The ink flow out uncontrollably and I had to throw them away.

Got slaughtered when I bought some pens from another shop. So don't give in to your impulse but do your research first. Stick with Fook Hing. You get good prices for well known brands like Sailors and Pilots. Get the flagship models like 1911 or Vanishing Point if you are not sure. These pens are very easy to clean making ink swapping easy.

Another good starter pens are Pelikan Souverän Series. You can buy the M150 cheaply from Mustafa. Pelikans nibs are removable. I would simply unscrew the nib and use eye-droppers to refill it with ink, avoiding the ink contamination if you just dip the pen into another ink bottle. Visit Richard Binder's site and get some stub and italic nibs. He does magic to them.

Better still start with cheap pens like Platinum Preppy or Berlitz from Germany (Art Friend at Taka have them). You have a whole life-time to collect the expensive pens. Experiment with inks and papers first. You should try Nightingale 'Handbook' journal from Mustafa. They costs less than S$6.00 each with stitched binding. I have been using them for months already and the only ink it cannot handle is Noodlers Green Bamboo which feathers worst of all.

Avoid attempts to self-repair your nibs with sand papers, finger nails or micro mesh. Go to Ruby Photo at Peninsula Shopping Centre and get a bottle of Agfa Photo-Flo wetting agent. A few drops from a syringe will solve most of your dry flow problems. Works well with ink with clogging problems like Noodlers Baystate blue. Let your pens season, it will soon behave well.

After buying so many expensive pens, I think I am finally cured. Even generous to the extent that I already gifted a Danitrio Cum Laude, a Pelikan M800, a M600 away. I only buy very cheap pens now. I love cricket-size nibs. The Sailor's King of Pen may be my next major purchase but am in no hurry.

As tt32003 mentioned, it can be a bit hard to say exactly, as Mustafa doesn't have a fixed 'discount' off recommended retail (The Safari FP is about 25% off, Parker Vector FP ~40%, Jotter BP ~50%). Also, the Sonnet come in a variety of options (steel or gold nib, finish etc.) that reflect a varying price. Its also counterfeited heavily, so you may want to stay away from ebay. If you buy from Fook Hing, Mustafa, or the pen/watch shop mentioned, you should get a decent price. However, if you don't like to bargain, you may want to stay away from the watch shop. Or you could try walking away, after which they will reduce the price further. :roflmho:

I like Fook Hing myself, and Bras Basah has quite a few other shops selling pens, but they sell at full retail. Also, they don't have cheaper pens. If you want PR ink or something like that then may you want to visit them. Also, if you're going to Mustafa's, you can get Pelikan 4001 ink from them. They take up an entire shelf in the stationery department and have the full range of colours. Most other stationers only have blue/black/blue-black.

I like Fook Hing too  The shop is quite small but it carries 20 over brands of writing instrument. I started buying fountain pens from the shop since 2004, you can usually get 15% to 25% off. Actually, the shop does carry fountain pens as cheap as $30.00. I've just purchased a Sailor 1911 demo from the shop, really smooth nib.

If you go to Malaysia regularly, visit the pen counters at Parkson/Parkson Grand departmental stores.

Their prices for Parker/Sheafer/Waterman/Cross etc are better compared to Sg.

And more or less with 20% discount perpetually.

Their price for Pelikan is even better. Even better than most online sellers.

Just visited Aesthetic Bay for the 1st time yesterday.....whoa!! A newbie here saw many other FP make..... :yikes: :yikes: OMG !! many with huge $tags!! Very fierce man !! Touched the Shaeffer Prelude for the 1st time (I know it is just an ordinary FP to many), it feels good - Matt rubbery surface, not slippery like a full metal FP at all. Nice!!
