Waterman Havana Brown

Welcome to my first ink review! I recently have had some troubles with ink. I got a Noodler's color that I absolutely LOVE, but when I put it in my Carene it was severe nib creep. It beaded up on the sides of the nib after only a few short strokes. So...it was time to find a more well behaved ink. Ghost Plane (our own Carene aficionado) suggested that the Waterman inks are much more well behaved. So, I thought I'd try Havana Brown. It is a very pleasant brown, with not a ton of shading, but it looks very nice on the page. Here is my handwritten review.

Thanks for the review, Matt. I'm not sure if it's the LCD monitor, but does the scanned image appear a reddish-purple colour rather than brown? Is it time for me to make an appointment with the ophthalmologist? Cut back on my caffeine intake? Wear my hair up? ;)

Talking about fountain pens is like dancing about architecture.

Yeah....it looks different on my monitor than it does in real life to me too (although I DO need to cut back on my caffeine)!

I scanned it at 600dpi, maybe I can try and adjust the image and make it match the ink color more. I'm still pretty new to this...and this is my first ink review.

Could be...it is a brand new scanner

In mine appears deep dark purple, too. Maybe is the scanner that needs calibration.

Thanks for the review!

I have the following interesting experience with Havana Brown: it dries to green in the nib. In fact, I went so far as to post a thread about it, here:

It's a weirdness I don't mind, and as long as I cap the pen then things are predictable enough.

I agree about the color of the scan as posted. It looks "purple" (I put in quotes to indicate my awareness of the vagaries of such a term) -- more so than the ink does in "real life." I will do an experiment, leave a nib open with Watermans Havana Brown in it and then post the green-to-brown results soon. :)

While I luse a lot of Waterman, I've never liked Havana Brown. I prefer warmer browns. I tried Diamine Sepia, but found it too "golden" in color. I may try Diamine Golden Brown, which looks more like sepia (some irony there).

I did the leave-out-the-nib-to-dry thing, as an experiment. I found that my Conklin Chicago pen dries out more than my striped Duofold by Parker, among other things. The green on a dry nib, and then a darker more chocolate-brownie color for a while until a mud-orange developed on a wet nib, both came through in flying (har har) colors on the page. But I can't get the scanner to replicate these colors very well at all. So, you'll have to trust me ... :)

I have two bottles of this ink, purchased at different times from different sellers, and neither of them looks at all like the scan. I think your scanner needs to be recalibrated.

Being color blind does have its advantages sometimes. I will forego any critisism of scanner calibration or monitor adjustment at this time. I do want to thank you for the evaluation of the ink though. Thank you. I think I will try that Golden Bown that leans more toward Sepia.
