Are the 4810 and 888 editions piston filled, or are they cartridge-converter pens?

Hi, I have seen the 888 edition in a MB boutique but unfortunately I didn't ask about this issue. However, It is quite big pen and therefore I assume that it is piston filled.

Best regards

What was the price on the 888? (A little mother of pearl usually has me at "hello.")

The price was above 5000 euros. I don't remember exactly but I think it was something like 5700 euros. It was big heavy pen. I didn't pay attention when they showed to me since, I visited them to buy William Faulkner FP. I didn't know that they have it. They show me, also, the picture of the new writer edition Bernard Shaw. They told me that it will arrive at their boutique in June.

Hi, I don't really remember details but I think it is in the size of 149. The barrel is made of mother of pearl. The clip and the rings are white gold. It was heavy pen. Today I have send them email to send me a picture of it and a picture of the new writer edition (provided they have). If they send me I will show you the pictures later today.

Oh dear. Mother of pearl + white gold = one that goes on my shopping list.

You are right. Even worst, there are limited editions which are not on MB website at all. Recently, MB pay attention to promote other luxury products like bags, leather etc.

The pen is around in the size of a 146 , comes with piston filling system. The diameter is between the 146 and the 149. The pictures of both pens are available next week at fountainpen.de ( if there is time for this ) :headsmack:

kind regards

You are quite right that Montblanc are promoting their other ranges much more at the moment. Pens are perhaps taking a back seat for the moment, with jewellery and leather goods at the fore.

Which is a massive shame, for a company whose history is based on writing instruments.

I was in my local MB Boutique this afternoon to pick up my Dostoevsky, which had just come back from Germany after a cap repair, so I asked to see the Francois I.

The pen is about the size of a 146 (though I did not have a 146 with which to compare them side by side) and it is a piston filler. The "semi-precious" tiger eye barrel is quite a lot darker when viewed in person than the pictures I have seen. It is predominantly a medium brown in color with darker brown/black veins and has an overall highly polished glassy sheen. In my opinion, the very generous plated gold trim is very tastefully engraved. This includes the clip which, by the way, arches out quite prominently from the cap when viewed from the side.

In the hand and unposted the pen is not heavy at all. For my taste it is extremely well balanced and should allow for long writing periods without fatigue. I did not test the pen posted as I never write this way with any of my pens. Price quoted was $2460.

Diamondback...

Great photos. Thanks for sharing these. I am amazed that this pen is not yet featured

on MB's website. It is a very beautiful and substantial pen in person.

Have you written with this pen yet? Do you plan on writing a review?

Vintner,

I, too, am surprised that MB does not keep their website updated with their new FP releases. As others have mentioned elsewhere in this forum, MB seem to be more focused on other areas of their ever-expanding product line.

I have not yet inked the Francois I. At the moment it is performing very well as eye candy for me. I have a few other new MB acquisitions that are ahead of it in the queue for my rotation. Any review I could provide at this time would only be text descriptions of the photos I have posted above. And, as has been said many times before, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Thanks for the reply. I've had the same struggle - taken the pen out many times to admire it; almost dipped it two days ago. Pen appears to me more beautiful in person than the photographs. The cap is rather heavy relative to the pen. I especially like the flat top/MB "white star" treatment of this pen. I think it will prove to be a more comfortable writer than a lot of the LEs.

Would be interested in your impressions when you do decide to write with it. Will share mine as well if anyone is curious to know.

Hi Diamondback, I was wondering what the cap material is. It looks like resin, but I can't be too sure!

PRAG,

The cap material does not appear to made of resin, "precious" or otherwise, as it is far too heavy. It seems to have a base of metal which may be coated with a deep lustrous black lacquer. I cannot be certain of this as it not acknowledged in the documentation that came with the pen which only contains a very limited description. It does mention the tiger eye stone barrel and black "precious" resin, but I believe that only the section and piston cap is made of the latter.

When I first handled the pen in the MB Boutique I noted how well balanced in the hand the pen was unposted. In my opinion posting would shift the balance of the pen too far back to be comfortable for writing.

I can't find any picture of this pen in it's 888 edition, anybody can post them?

I have a chance to meet with the 888 edition. The whole thing is the same as the 4810 edition with the cap and barrel made of mother of pearl (WOW) and the rings in white gold. It is really unforgettable. :puddle:

I have also met the 888 edition of the Humbodlt, black onyx and gold combination. The cruvings on the barrel and cap are stunning(and so is the price :roflmho: ).

The sales lady also show me the "Hundertwasser Limited Edition 100", beautifully designed.

I have one silly question:  Are pens with mother of pearl materials hard to keep in good condition? Especially in sub-tropical area?

Thanks.

Photos of the 888 edition have been posted on the fountainpen.de website.. The mother of pearl cap and barrel complimented with white gold fittings look stunning.
